SERMON TOPIC: “DO NOT MOCK GOD’S WARNING”
Text: Isaiah 28:22 (KJV)
“Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.”
Introduction:
Isaiah 28:22 is a serious warning from God. The people had heard God's word, but instead of responding with repentance and obedience, they treated His warning lightly. God therefore warned them not to mock.
The message is simple: When God warns, we must listen. When God corrects, we must repent. When God gives instruction, we must obey.
1. Do not mock God's Word
Galatians 6:7
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
God cannot be deceived. We may deceive people, but we cannot deceive God. Every action has consequences.
Proverbs 14:9 says:
“Fools make a mock at sin…”
Do not laugh at sin, celebrate sin, or treat sinful things as insignificant.
2. God's warning is an expression of His mercy.
When God warns us, He is giving us an opportunity to change before judgment comes.
Hebrews 3:15
“To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts…”
Do not wait until the consequences become severe before you respond to God's voice.
3. Sin can make a person's “bands” stronger
Isaiah said:
“Lest your bands be made strong.”
The picture is that of bo***ge becoming tighter. Persistent disobedience can deepen a person's bo***ge and make it harder to turn away from destructive habits.
John 8:34
“Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”
Therefore, when the Holy Spirit convicts you, respond immediately. Do not continually postpone repentance.
4. Do not despise correction
Proverbs 12:1
“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”
A wise believer welcomes correction because correction can preserve his life.
Proverbs 27:5
“Open rebuke is better than secret love.”
Sometimes God's correction may be uncomfortable, but it is intended for our good.
5. Fear God and take His Word seriously
Ecclesiastes 12:13
“Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…”
The fear of God is not terror that drives us away from Him. It is reverence that makes us take His Word seriously.
Genesis 6:3 shows that God gave humanity a period of warning before judgment.
Therefore, never mistake God's patience for God's approval of sin.
