BREAKING: Court restrains Rivers chief judge from receiving impeachment notice against Fubara

A high court in Port Harcourt has issued an interim order restraining the chief judge of Rivers from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against Siminalayi Fubara, the state governor, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The Rivers state house of assembly had asked the chief judge of the state to constitute a panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct levelled against Fubara and Odu.

The European Union (EU) has removed Nigeria, along with five other African countries, from its list of “high-risk third country jurisdictions” for money laundering and terrorism financing.

The other countries delisted include South Africa, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

The decision reportedly follows the countries’ successful removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list after reforms to strengthen their anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) frameworks.

In October 2025, the FATF announced Nigeria’s delisting from its grey list of countries with deficiencies in their AML/CFT regimes.

According to Business Insider Africa, the European Commission confirmed on Wednesday that the affected countries had addressed “strategic deficiencies” in their financial systems and now meet international standards set by the FATF.

The commission said the reforms implemented by the countries were sufficient to warrant their removal from the EU’s financial high-risk list.

With enhanced due diligence requirements set to be lifted from January 29, the delisting is expected to ease trade and payment flows, reduce transaction costs, and boost investor confidence in the affected economies.

Reacting to the development, Doris Uzoka-Anite, minister of state for finance, described Nigeria’s removal from the list as a major milestone.

“Big win for Nigeria! Removed from EU’s financial ‘high-risk’ list! Congrats to President Bola Tinubu on this achievement,” she wrote on X.

“As minister of state for finance, I’m proud of this boost to trade and investor confidence.”

Yesterday at Umuoji, a man named Mr Basil Ejike was buried, he died after drinking and eating pork meat with his friend at a beer parlor.

According to the story, Mr Ejike, Age 50 returned from Lagos for a burial in his hometown Omuoji and he was just passing and he saw his friend enjoying a beer parlour and he decided to join his friend,so he took some pork meat from his friends plate....

They both ate and discussed as long time friends and everyone went their separate ways after they were done.

That same night his stomach started biting him and it became more serious that his family started asking him,, what did u eat he said it was just pork meat he took from his friends plate.

Unfortunately, before they could reach the hospital he gave up. the worst part of it is that the friend he ate from his plate was also found dead that same night. Both of them lost their lives after eating the meat they bought from this shop in the picture below....

The youth of the village sealed the shop and had a protest by the shop on the day of his burial.

There was no concrete report concerning the owner of the shop, if he or she was arrested or detained... This pathetic story is an indication that you have to be careful this season

BREAKING: TAX: FG Mandates 7.5% VAT on Mobile Transfers and USSD From Jan 19

FG Announces Implementation of 7.5% VAT on Selected Electronic Banking Services From January 19

The Federal Government has announced that a 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be applied to selected electronic banking services, including mobile bank transfers and USSD transactions, effective from January 19, 2026.

This implementation follows a regulatory directive from the tax authorities mandating financial institutions to begin VAT collection and remittance on applicable electronic banking charges.

In a notice issued to customers, Moniepoint informed users of the upcoming change, stating that financial institutions are required to collect and remit the 7.5% VAT to the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS).

The notice reads in part: “From Monday, 19 January 2026, we are required to collect a 7.5% VAT, to be remitted to the Nigerian Revenue Service (formerly known as the Federal Inland Revenue Service).”

The directive is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax compliance and enhance government revenue through the digital financial services sector.

Members of the public are advised to take note of the commencement date and make necessary adjustments in planning their electronic transactions.
