Qazilbash in Afghanistan
Pronounced : kiz-uhl-BAHSH

The word Qizilbash is an Ottoman Turkish word referring to red headgear. This headgear was associated with the "twelver" Shi'ite Muslims. The Qizilbash were a coalition of many different tribes of predominantly Turkic-speaking Azerbaijani peoples united in their adherence to Shia Islam and can be traced back to the 15th century. An early leader of the Qizilbash (named Ismail) lead forces which conquered most of what is Iran today, spreading the teachings of Shia Islam. The Qizilbash have a reputation for being skilled warriors and have long been associated with sources of power. The predominantly Sunni Muslims of Afghanistan have sometimes resented the Shia Qizilbash.

Ministry Obstacles
The religious zeal of the Qizilbash people can be a huge obstacle to the gospel since it is misplaced.

Outreach Ideas
Their religious zeal can potentially become an asset if the Holy Spirit leads them to directing that zeal into devotion to the Savior who died to pay for their sins.

Scripture Focus
"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil," Hebrews 2:14

Scripture Prayer
Pray for today’s people group to escape the power of death and the devil and to flee to Jesus Christ.

Prayer Focus
Pray for a spiritual hunger that will lead the Qizilbash people to the cross. Pray for a clear presentation of the gospel message among the Qizilbash that will lead to a movement to Christ. Pray that God will raise up laborers who are willing to reach the Qizilbash for Christ, no matter what the cost. Pray for a church planting movement among the Qizilbash people.

Khik (Wakhi) in China
Pronounced : keek (WAH-kee)

The name of this people group sounds exotic, and the Wakhi definitely fulfill that descriptive term. They live along China's border with Pakistan in the Khunjerab Valley, the valley of blood. Small in number, they are inclusive, living in extended families and usually marrying within their clan. The Wakhi are Shia Muslims who also practice a wide variety of animistic rituals.

Ministry Obstacles
They are hard to reach in their remote location. In addition, their religious views do not allow for an essential Savior.

Outreach Ideas
While missionaries were active in the region inhabited by the Wakhi back in the 1920s and 1930s, no one accepted Christ. Most likely, few members of this people group have ever heard of, much less responded to, the gospel of Christ. While radio and online ministry could be useful, it is more likely that someone will need to go to the Wakhi to share God's love with them.

Scripture Focus
"How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard," Hebrews 2:3

Scripture Prayer
Pray that this people group would not ignore good news of salvation announced by the Lord Jesus.

Prayer Focus
Pray for the Wakhi to have the opportunity to hear the gospel. Pray for the Lord to raise up mission workers who are willing to learn the language and go to this remote area of the globe. Pray for the Bible to be translated into the Wakhi language. Ask God for a great harvest of souls among this people group and for a church planting movement to sweep through their homes and villages.

Ilavan in Sri Lanka
Pronounced : ee-LAH-van

The Ilavan people work as toddy-tappers. This means they extract sap from palms such as coconut and palmyra to make an alcoholic beverage. They grow coconut, palm and sugar. Most Ilavan people in Sri Lanka are now farmers. Others are builders, chauffeurs, handymen, truck drivers and taxi drivers.

Ministry Obstacles
Ilavan people in Sri Lanka practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of South Asia. For centuries, they have believed that the Hindu gods are the only ones who can provide for their needs. There is also a lot of social pressure to remain in the Hindu fold.

Outreach Ideas
Since the Ilavan people don't have a god they can lean on for love and actual care, they might be drawn to the God of the Bible if someone would go to them.

Scripture Focus
"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world." Hebrews 1:1-2

Scripture Prayer
Pray that today’s people group comes to understand that the one, true God has spoken through His Son, Jesus Christ. Pray they would have the wisdom to listen to Jesus.

Prayer Focus
Pray that the tiny Ilavan church would live as a light in a spiritually dark part of the world. Pray that many would have the power of the Holy Spirit to be Christ's hands and feet to their Hindu neighbors. Pray for spiritual hunger. Pray for a movement to Christ among the Ilavan people of Sri Lanka this decade. Pray for their elders to have a desire for true spiritual nourishment that can only come from Jesus Christ.

Sri Lanka Moor in Sri Lanka
Pronounced : moorh

The Moors of Sri Lanka trace their ancestry to Arab traders who settled to the island nation sometime between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. Muslim merchants arrived in large numbers, married local women and stayed. The Buddhist Sinhalese and the Hindu Tamils fought a devasting civil war in Sri Lanka from 1983 to 2009. Most Moors tried to stay neutral in the war. Others supported the Hindus who spoke Tamil.

Ministry Obstacles
The Moors must understand the true nature of Jesus Christ. He is much more than a human prophet. Being Muslim is an integral part of the Moors' identity.

Outreach Ideas
The main language of the Sri Lankan Moors is Tamil. The complete Tamil Bible is available. Other Tamil resources include the JESUS Film, Gospel Recordings and God's Story.

Scripture Focus
"This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—" Titus 1:5

Scripture Prayer
Pray for the Lord to raise up elders to lead this people group into all truth.

Prayer Focus
There are few if any known Christian believers among the Moors of Sri Lanka. Pray that the believers who speak Tamil in southern India would develop a burden for the Moors of Sri Lanka. Pray for healing among the major ethnic groupings on the island. Pray that the Moors would tune in to Tamil radio and TV broadcasts. Pray that the Lord would raise up a growing church this decade among the Sri Lankan Moors.
