I know a young man in my institution who, all his life, was even a leader in the fellowship. He never looked at a sister lustfully—never had anything to do with any sister.
Then he went home for the holidays and went to the village to stay with his grandparents. While he was there—he who didn't sleep with girls in the university—a village girl in the choir sang one day. It was like the sound of angels, and he decided to go into her. I'm telling you a true life story. He went into her, and then all of a sudden, he became sick—running from place to place seeking help.
When he came back, he went to his family doctor, because he was from a Christian home. They ran all the tests, but found nothing. Finally, the doctor said, "If not for the fact that I know you and know that you are a man of God, I would have suggested you take an HIV test."
The guy broke down in tears and said, "Oh God, we need to do the test! I'm a man of God, but... a village girl!"
They ran the test, and he was found HIV positive. The one time he decided to step out of his consecration, Satan was waiting.
God goes looking for His soldiers—those who understand, "I cannot be entangled, because that single lapse might be the difference between winning or losing the war. I cannot be entangled; I must keep my eyes on the prize, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith."
So Paul begins by showing us that there is warfare, and the first posture the believer takes is the posture of a soldier. In being a soldier, what is important is to know the consecration of a soldier. While there are general consecrations, there are also unique consecrations for every specific calling.
