✝️📖TEXT: Haggai 2:10-14 (NKJV)

2:10. On the twenty-fourth [day] of the ninth [month,] in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
2:11. "Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Now, ask the priests [concerning the] law, saying,
2:12. "If one carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with the edge he touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any food, will it become holy?" ' " Then the priests answered and said, "No."
2:13. And Haggai said, "If [one who is] unclean [because] of a dead body touches any of these, will it be unclean?" So the priests answered and said, "It shall be unclean."
2:14. Then Haggai answered and said, " 'So is this people, and so is this nation before Me,' says the LORD, 'and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

✝️📝STUDY:
In our text today, two questions were asked and were meant to be answered by the Priests. The first was whether a garment used to bear Holy Meat would become clean. In other words, will the garment become clean by touching Holy Meat? The answer was no. The second question was whether something unclean (by touching a dead body) can make something else that is clean (holy) to become unclean. The answer was yes, meaning that the unclean thing will defile a clean thing, causing it to become unclean-like itself. Thus, the point being emphasized by the two questions was that it is easier to become unclean (defiled) than it is to be made clean (made Holy).

There are great lessons for us to learn from this passage. As we interact with people and the environment, we need at all times to be careful lest we become defiled by the immoral people that we relate with in the course of our daily transactions. One of the things that easily causes defilement is evil association (1 Cor. 6:14-18) and some often-overlooked sinful habits (Heb.12:1-3). The world today is full of wicked and sinful people whose daily lives are corrupted by habitual, ungodly and criminal lifestyles. Most of these people are deeply religious and some of them even occupy high positions in the church. They also give to charity and humanitarian services, thinking that they can use good works to erase their sins or make themselves clean. This is not possible. The sure way to be cleansed from the guilt of sin is by honest confession and genuine repentance and cleansing by the blood of the lamb (Act 3:19).

✝️🙏 PRAYER: Dear Lord, I rely on the blood of Christ for my cleansing. Help me daily to live by the power of your Holy Spirit and to remain undefiled, Amen.

SELF- DISCIPLINE: A Mark of Maturity

Perpend the following:

“Self-discipline is when your conscience tells you to do something, and you don’t talk back” (W.K. Hope)

“Discipline is decision dictated by determined destiny” (Myles Munroe)

Edeh is tagged “a hard man” by his associates. He keeps to time. He does not subscribe to what his people call “African Time.” He does not eat or drink everywhere and anyhow, he does not talk every time and anyhow. He does not spend money recklessly. He is in control of his emotions in laughing, crying, etc. For these reasons they tagged him “hard man.” “Hard man” not in the negative sense, but in the sense which means that he is a man of strong character who is not easily moved by what he sees or hears. He insists on following the standard and the rule of the game or due process. He is a self-controlled man. He is a stickler for the rules.

Discipline is the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way which involves obeying rules or standards. Discipline is often associated with self-control, restraint, will power and the ability to resist temptation.
Self-discipline is the ability to control one’s action, thought and emotions and to consistently follow rules and standards to achieve goals. It is about building habits, making sacrifices for long term goals and staying focused and persistent.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of self-control as key aspect of Christian living; highlighting its role in spiritual growth and overcoming temptation. It is presented both as a personal responsibility and as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Scriptural examples and teachings emphasize the need for believers to control their desires and actions ultimately leading to more fulfilling and godly life

Practical manifections of self-discipline:
Controlling Desires: “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without a wall” (Prov 25:28). This highlights the importance of managing desires and impulses. A person without self -discipline is vulnerable and has no barrier against temptation and emotional danger.
Abstinence: Intentionally abstaining from certain things like food, drinks, and other pleasures. People of Faith call this act “fasting.”
Spiritual Discipline: Regular and consistent Prayers, bible study, fellowship, devotion and meditation all contribute to spiritual growth and self-discipline
Mark of Maturity: Titus 1:8 describes an elder as “one who is hospitable, who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplines.” This emphasizes that self-control is a characteristic of a mature person.

Kindly perpend the benefits of Self-discipline. Self- discipline offers numerous benefits among which are:
• Promoting healthy living- Being disciplined in doing those things that contribute to better physical and mental health like regular exercise, healthy eating, reading, etc promotes heathy living.
• Building Confidence – gaining sense of accomplishment and self-mastery which can be applied to various aspects of life from personal to professional and to inter – personal relations.
• Improve Focus – Strengthening will power and allowing one to resist distraction and stay focused on tasks.
• Strengthens Relationships - By promoting responsibility, reliability and respect. And helps one to be more proactive and communicate effectively
• Ultimately self-discipline leads to more structured and successful life. That is a well-organized, planned and manageable lifestyle which reduces stress.

FULFILMENT IN MINISTRY: Not measured by material acquisitions.

Perpend the following:

“Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the lord, that you may fulfil it” (Colossians 4:19)

Apostle Paul saw the fulfilling of ministry as essential that he admonished Archippus to take heed to fulfil the ministry that was committed to him (Colossians 4:17). Fulfillment in ministry or fulfilling one’s ministry refers to the act of carrying out specific work or calling God has placed upon a person’s life. It involves, diligently and faithfully performing one’s duties, staying true to the mission, spiritual fruitfulness or spiritual growth, personal growth or transformation and persevering through challenges and doubts. Essentially it is about finding joy, purpose, and satisfaction in actively serving God and others, often within a church or faith context.

Some in ministry, like many in society in general, might measure effectiveness (fulfilment) by the number of tasks being completed. “Busyness could be mistaken for effectiveness”. There certainly are tasks to be completed but those tasks are not the ends. Completing tasks alone is not necessarily “fulfilling ministry”.
The fulfilment of ministry has nothing to do with the number of cars you bought and estates you built for yourself. It has nothing to do with your gorgeous clothes. It has nothing to do with whether your vestments are from Wippell, London, Aba or lagos tailors. It has nothing to do with a life of ostentation and pomp. It has nothing to do with laurels and titles acquired. It may not even be the attraction of mammoth crowd or the building of gigantic edifices for the Church, even though this is not wrong. You need to know that the most sophisticated cathedral without the presence of God is a profane place. The fulfilment of ministry has to do with doing God’s will in ministry and the impact of ministry on both the individual and the wider community.

Kindly perpend how to fulfil your ministry.
• Seek God’s Guidance: Pray for wisdom to understand Gods calling on your life and how to best fulfil it.
• Use Your Gifts: Identify your unique talents and abilities and utilize them to serve God by serving others.
• Be Diligent: Give your all to the ministry God has entrusted to your even when it is challenging.
• Be Faithful: Remain steadfast in your commitment to God’s will even when faced with discouragement or doubt.
• Seek Discernment: Ask for prayer and guidance from other leaders to make sure you are on the right path.

“The true measure of our success is not the number of our accomplishments, but the faithfulness with which we fulfil our calling” (Melisa Berry)
