For over two decades, Bill Gates has been one of the most influential voices speaking about Africaโs future. From malaria prevention to vaccines, from global health predictions to agricultural projects, the Gates Foundation has been present across key areas of African development.

But a deeper question remains: what does Bill Gates really want from Africa? Is it purely philanthropyโor is there another layer of interest? As Africa moves toward 2050, when one in four humans will be African, this question deserves honest dialogue.
Here are seven respectful but necessary questions:
1. On Health and Malaria
The Gates Foundation has invested billions in malaria prevention. Yet malaria still kills many in Africa. Are these efforts aimed at long-term elimination, or do they risk keeping Africa tied to aid cycles?
2. On COVID-19 Predictions
Before COVID-19, Gates warned of millions of deaths in Africa. Thankfully, the continent fared better than predicted. Were those forecasts cautious scienceโor were they used to shape global policy directions?
3. On Agriculture and GMOs
The Foundation supports genetically modified crops in Africa. Some communities welcome this; others raise concerns about long-term effects. Is Africa being positioned as a testing ground, or as a true partner in innovation?
4. On Technology and Data
Gates-backed initiatives gather huge amounts of African health and agricultural data. Who ultimately owns this data, and how is it shaping Africaโs future?
5. On Global Priorities
Why Africa? There are urgent needs in Asia, Europe, and the Americas too. Why does Africa remain at the center of Gatesโ focus? Is it charityโor strategy, since Africa will soon be home to the worldโs largest youth population?
6. On Speculations and Accountability
Across the continent, there are speculationsโwhether about health programs, vaccines, or food systems. How can the Foundation address these perceptions openly, rather than dismissing them as โconspiracyโ?
7. On Africaโs Own Capacity
Most importantly, Africa has the talent, creativity, and resources to solve its own problems. Is the Foundation empowering African-led solutions, or shaping them in ways that deepen dependency?
Why These Questions Matter
The one who feeds you often influences your choices. This isnโt about rejecting philanthropy, but about ensuring transparency, accountability, and Africaโs sovereignty.
So my central question remains:
Mr. Gates, what do you really want from Africa?
Because beyond aid and charity, what is at stake is Africaโs right to determine its own future.
