WHAT BECOMES BORN AGAIN?
Understanding the Spirit, Soul, and Body
Many believers have been in church for years, yet they still struggle with one question: What exactly becomes born again?
Some think everything changes instantly the moment they receive Christ. Others become discouraged because they still battle temptation, fear, anger, and old habits, wondering if they were truly saved.
The answer is found in understanding how God created man.
The Bible declares:
"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
Notice that Paul does not say man is merely a body with a soul. He identifies three distinct parts: spirit, soul, and body.
If you fail to understand these three dimensions, you will misunderstand salvation, spiritual warfare, sanctification, and even your walk with God.
Man Is a Spirit
You are not primarily a body.
You are a spirit that possesses a soul and lives in a body.
Your body connects you to the physical world.
Your soul connects you to your personality your mind, emotions, and will.
Your spirit is the deepest part of you, created to fellowship with God.
When Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, his body did not die immediately. His soul continued to think and feel. But his spirit was separated from God. Spiritual death entered humanity.
This is why Jesus did not come merely to improve human behavior. He came to restore what died in Eden.
The Spirit Is What Becomes Born Again
Jesus told Nicodemus:
"Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)
Nicodemus thought Jesus was speaking about another physical birth.
But Jesus corrected him:
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:6)
Jesus was revealing that the new birth is not physical it is spiritual.
The moment you place your faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit breathes divine life into your dead spirit.
You become a new creation.
"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17)
The greatest miracle is not merely a healed body.
The greatest miracle is a dead spirit coming alive by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God takes up residence within you, and communion with God is restored.
The Soul Must Be Renewed
Although your spirit is instantly made alive, your soul is not instantly perfected.
Your soul contains your mind, your emotions, your memories, your reasoning, and your will.
Many believers become confused because they still think old thoughts after being saved.
They wonder why fear still comes.
Why temptation still comes.
Why wrong emotions still arise.
It is because your spirit has been regenerated, but your mind must still be renewed.
Paul says:
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2)
Notice that transformation comes through renewal.
God does not merely remove your old way of thinking He teaches you a new way of thinking through His Word.
Every time you meditate on Scripture, obey the Holy Spirit, and submit to Christ, your soul is progressively brought into alignment with your born-again spirit.
This is sanctification.
The Body Awaits Redemption
Your body is the earthly tent you live in.
It still feels pain.
It still becomes tired.
It still grows old.
It is still subject to the effects of the fall.
This is why Christians can become sick.
This is why believers still die physically.
Paul writes:
"We eagerly wait... for the redemption of our bodies." (Romans 8:23)
One day, when Christ returns, mortality will put on immortality.
Weakness will put on glory.
Corruption will put on incorruption.
The same Jesus who rose from the dead will transform our bodies into glorified bodies that will never die again.
That day is coming.
Why the Battle Continues
One of Satan's greatest weapons is discouragement.
He whispers, "If you were really saved, you wouldn't still struggle."
But Scripture reveals another picture.
The spirit delights in God.
The soul is being renewed.
The body still carries human weakness.
This is why there is a daily battle.
The flesh desires one thing.
The Spirit desires another.
Victory is not found by trusting your own strength. Victory comes by yielding to the Holy Spirit.
When your spirit governs your soul, your soul begins to govern your body.
God's order is restored.
Live from the Spirit
Many believers spend their lives living from the outside in.
They allow circumstances to control their emotions.
Their emotions control their decisions.
Their decisions shape their lives.
But the believer is called to live from the inside out.
The Holy Spirit speaks to your spirit.
Your spirit influences your mind.
Your renewed mind directs your choices.
Your body follows in obedience.
This is how spiritual maturity develops.
A Prophetic Call
The Holy Spirit is calling the Church back to the place of spiritual reality.
Stop judging your identity by your feelings.
Stop measuring your salvation by yesterday's failures.
If you have truly believed in Christ, your spirit has been made alive.
Now allow the Word of God to renew your mind.
Allow the Holy Spirit to shape your character.
Present your body daily as a living sacrifice.
Do not live beneath your new nature.
You are no longer merely flesh trying to reach God.
You are a child of God whose spirit has been awakened by heaven.
Walk in the Spirit.
Think according to the Spirit.
Speak according to the Spirit.
Live according to the Spirit.
The day is coming when your soul will be perfectly conformed to Christ, and your body will be glorified in His presence.
Until then, stand firm.
Your spirit has been born again.
Your soul is being transformed.
Your body is awaiting redemption.
The God who began this good work in you will surely bring it to completion on the day of Jesus Christ.
