AVOIDING THE QUEEN VASHTI MISTAKE
King Ahasuerus was a great King, ruling from India to Ethiopia as the book of Esther 1:1 stated.
Invariably his wife, Queen Vashti was not a small Queen but one that wielded great influence and power over all the women in the large kingdom which had one hundred twenty-seven provinces.
She was indeed powerful and influential for just being the Queen to King Ahasuerus.
It is a blessing for a woman when her marriage bestows upon her a higher status in life.
Queen Vashti enjoyed such elevated life which her marriage to Ahasuerus brought her way.
Marriage naturally brings or bestows a higher status to every woman whether socially, materially, spiritually, or financially, whilst the wife remains a crown of her husband. – Proverbs 12:4.
Even being a mother is a serious position that comes with huge responsibility.
So, at the climax of a special feast organized by King Ahasuerus, the king decided to showcase his crown the – wife. This means that the king has two crowns... the physical crown on his head, and the metaphorical crown which the wife represents.
Unfortunately, the euphoria of the ongoing party and festivity beclouded the senses of Vashti in realizing that in all her glory, influence and splendour as queen, she was still someone’s crown to be worn at will, and to be showcased when occasion demands.
So, in Esther 1: 10-12:
“On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold. But queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command brought by his eunuchs; therefore, the king was furious and his anger burned within him”
The queen’s refusal to honour the kings request which was totally in line with her role in the life of the king caused a major turning point. The king’s mood moved from one of a merry heart to that of anger. This was very avoidable.
A woman’s exalted position either in society, ministry, business, etc should not be allowed to replace the fundamental role the marriage institution has placed her in the life of her husband.
Queen Vashti’s excuse was that she was busy entertaining herself and her women friends and has no time to answer the king who needed to show the world how beautiful his other crown -the wife is.
That fundamental negligence by Vashti resulted in her enthronement.
It is wisdom for every woman to know her role in the life of her husband and be committed to fulfilling it.
Queen Esther was a model, and the king makers felt that tolerating her disobedience would set bad example for other women.
Every child of God is a model.
Every godly woman should be a good model to other women.
Queen Vashti lost her position in the life of the king and in the society by a careless behaviour.
May you not be carried away from fulfilling your role in your family, marriage, the church, and society as a virtuous woman.
