WEEK/STUDY 22

TOPIC: THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE SOURCE OF OUR POWER
TEXT: ACTS 1:4-9

INTRODUCTION
God is the creator of everything. He designed man to be like Him - a living being. For believers, God designed it that we cannot live to our full capacity or level without the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit lives within believer, but if we do not understand His purposes for us and His work in us, we will not enjoy the fullness of God’s power in our Christians lives. The Holy Spirit’s activity in the world is apparent from the very beginning of the Old Testament when “the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Gen. 1:2). He is after all “the eternal Spirit” (Hebrews 9:14). The Holy Spirit’s ministry is more pronounced in the New Testament era. A believer cannot achieve much without the fullness of Holy Spirit in his/her life. The Holy Spirit is the source of power in a believer.

QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSIONS
1. Identify the difference in operation of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and the New Testament. 1 Samuel 10:5-13; 1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51:11, John 14:16-17; Eph. 4:30.

2. The Holy Spirit is given to every believer in this present church era. Discuss. Romans 8:9; Romans 8:15; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 4:6.

3. What are the works/functions of the Holy Spirit that can help believers in their relationship with God? John. 14:16-17,26; John 15:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 1:13-14.

4. How can we be filled with this power? John 3:6-8; Acts 4:31; Acts 6:5; Romans 8:2-6.

CONCLUSION
The Holy Spirit empowers, teaches, helps, in dwells and unites us: He also seals us with the promise that we are the Lord’s. He is very active daily within us, helping to bring us closer to the image of the Lord Himself (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). That is why the scripture commanded us to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

If you desire to truly serve God and be a blessing to the body of Christ, you must be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

MEMORY VERSE
Luke 4:1 “Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness” NKJV

METHODIST REFLECTION FOR TODAY

TUESDAY 19TH MAY, 2020

THEME: Respect God's Offerings

PASSAGE: Leviticus 22:1-6

Read - Day: Heb 9 Night: 1 Sam 3-5

When you hear the word "holy," what do you think of? The commentaries have a lot to say about the subject, but a good working definition of when something is "holy" has three elements: When something is (1) set apart (2) by God (3) for His special purpose. For instance, we think of ancient Israel's priests as dealing very carefully with holy things, such as their vestments, bowls and sacrifices, in order to avoid profaning them by improper use.

God gave them procedures for handling these articles, and the priests followed those procedures carefully. God's offering is sacrosanct and must be respected. Many people today, especially those in positions of authority in the church are very careless about offerings to God. They have put themselves in a very difficult situation as a result of lack of respect such offerings.

I use to have a steward in of one the local churches where I served. He only came to church to steal from the offering and tithes contributed by members of the church. Because offering to God is sacrosanct, one day he was caught and disgraced.

Take note that Tithe and offering belong to God and they are holy. If you are a Christian and you don't give God your tithe, you are treating God's tithes with contempt and it is a sin before Him. God's tithes are holy. They are set apart by God for specific purposes, and we are to use them in a prescribed manner. The tithe is the Lord's—not ours. Malachi 3:8 states: "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings." If we spend them for our personal uses, we are taking something that is God's, and we are profaning what is holy.

PRAYER: Jehovah Jireh, always grant me the means and grace to correctly pay my tithes and offerings to the glory and honour of Your name. Amen.

HYMN: MHB 31 – GOD reveals His presence.

MEMORY VERSE: Leviticus 22:2 "Tell Aaron and his sons to be very careful with the sacred gifts that the Israelites set apart for Me, so they do not bring shame on My holy name. I am the Lord."

TUESDAY 12TH MAY, 2020

THEME: Our Works Speak

PASSAGE: Matthew 11:1 – 9

Read - Day: Mark 14:32-72; Night: 1 Chro 1

There was a video clip about a brother, who preached to a commercial motorcyclist (called Okada in Nigeria). The okada man felt touched by the Word he heard and was willing to give his life to Christ. At the point when the brother wanted to pray for him the brother received a phone call from their evangelism team leader. He told the new convert to wait and be prayed for by the team leader. When the Sister came, she was someone, who had earlier had an ugly encounter with the okada man, in which she abused the man, rained insults and curses on him because of transport fare. On sighting the lady, the new convert said that it will be better for him to remain as an unbeliever than to allow the sister to pray for him. As he turned to go, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle and he died on the spot.

John was put into prison by Herod Antipas shortly after Jesus started His public ministry. While in prison, John heard of the works being done by Christ and sent his disciples to inquire from Him. Many assumptions and interpretations have been given to this action of John. One thing very significant here is that John was attracted by what he heard that Jesus was doing. The story of the works of Jesus was spreading even beyond prison bars.

Child of God, what does your work say about you; about the Christian faith; and about the Church? Paul, writing to the Corinthian Church, said we are epistles known and read by men. Our evangelism, fellowship, teaching and testimonies are good but, what we do will speak more and draw more persons to Christ than just our words may do. We must, therefore, not be Christians only in church on Sundays, but we must be called children of God at all times, judging from our actions everywhere we go.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, let my works speak grace to hearers and draw sinners to you all the days of my life. Amen.

HYMN: MHB 576 – BE it my only wisdom here

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 11:5 "The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor."
