HOW IMPORTANT ARE BEES TO OUR ECOSYSTEM?

Today, I had the opportunity to speak with two different sets of people.

The first person was someone who already had some knowledge about the ecosystem and the importance of pollinators.

The second set of people?

They told me, in one way or another, that they hated bees but loved honey.

And I said to myself, this is exactly why we need more education about bees.

Let me share a real-life experience with you.

I was assigned to a situation at a company where there had been a lot of bee activity around the premises. Because the bees were disturbing people and there were concerns about attacks, the first thought was:

“Let's spray them.”

The pest control officer told me that a friend had already done some research online about bees. He had learned a few things, but he didn't really have enough practical experience.

And I told him:

Learning is not the problem. You can learn anything. But in beekeeping, practical experience matters.

He then started telling me about his experience around the farm area.

He noticed that they had been using chemicals around the farm for some time, and he had observed that some plants were no longer producing as well as they used to.

For example, mango trees that previously produced massively were not producing as much.

Other plants that were expected to produce well were also showing reduced production.

Then he asked me:

“When you come to evacuate or transfer the bees, do you also use chemicals?”

I said:

“God forbid!”

I am an advocate for bees and beekeeping. Why would I use chemicals to eliminate the very insects I am trying to protect?

My approach is to understand the situation, manage the bees properly, and where possible, safely remove and relocate them rather than destroy them.

Then I met another group of people.

When they saw us placing swarm catcher around the areas where the bees were causing concern, they asked:

“Should we run away?”

I took my time to educate them.

I explained to them that bees are not simply insects that exist to sting people.

They are part of a much bigger system.

And after listening, they said:

“Ah! That's true. You are saying the truth.”
