GOD IS DOING SOMETHING

"In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." John 14:2-3 ESV

Imagine what the disciples of Jesus felt when He told them that His time was up. It was too much to swallow. They had stayed with Him for about three years. They had enjoyed His presence. They knew there was nothing comparable to walking with Jesus. He was the centre of their world. In this passage, Jesus gives them reasons to be encouraged.

The first reason was that He is going to prepare a place for them in His Father's house. The second is like this: When He is done, He will come again and take them to be with Him. Jesus intends for them to be encouraged by His purpose, not distraught by their feelings. It felt like abandonment, but it was for preparation.

When we enter trying phases in life, discerning God's presence can seem difficult. We may even feel like God has abandoned us to go through our trials alone. But one thing that will establish our hearts is the Lord's purpose. He is preparing something. He is doing something for our good; we will soon see Him.

Is life getting you down? Does it look like God has abandoned you? If you believe in Jesus, you have real hope. Whatever God is doing will bring you good. That season will be over. Then, you will know that you were not abandoned. Even if nothing changes now, know that when this is over, you will be with Jesus forever.

Pray: Father, let Your purpose always encourage my heart in every season in Jesus' name.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A PEACEFUL HEART

"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." John 14:1 ESV

Powerful truths are seldom communicated with plenty of words. Oftentimes, dense sentences bear weighty truths. Jesus communicates a powerful truth in two connected sentences. This truth will shift your mindset when it sinks in.

In today's passage, He connects a peaceful heart to believing in the Father and Him. This also suggests that when there is a lack of peace, it is not due to anything else but to a failure to believe in God. Christ knew that confusion was about to set in for His disciples due to His arrest and death, so He offered them the path to peace beforehand.

Whenever we are confused, the issue is not how tough the surrounding situations are, but how firm our faith in God is. When we believe in God, then confusion will always lose its power over us. Confusion is not normal for people who believe in God. When it appears, it indicates a lack of faith in God.

Whenever your heart is troubled, know that you are not believing in God. It may be because you have subtly shifted to wanting to do things for yourself or something similar. Instead, choose to believe in God in every situation because that is the path to peace. God has paired your peace with your faith in Him; when one is affected, the other is affected as well.

Pray: Father, help me keep believing in You through everything I go through, in Jesus' name.

BELIEVERS' QUALITY ASSURANCE

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35 ESV

Quality assurance is a crucial field in human endeavours. It helps separate the fake or low-quality from the top-quality. People charged with this task have a strict sense of standard and will not allow anything below that standard. Jesus shares the main metric of believers' quality in today's passage.

Before this passage, the law required men to love God and their neighbours. So, when Jesus declared that He was giving a new kind of commandment to love, it puzzles us. But this confusion is quickly settled when He qualifies how the disciples should love. They should love just as He has loved them. Now, that's new!

Jesus loved His disciples deeply and sacrificially. He literally gave His life for them. He shared His life with them, He fed them, prayed for them, taught them, and had everything in common with them. It was no surprise that when the Holy Spirit came, they began to display this sacrificial love toward one another. They sold their properties and used the proceeds to help the poor.

This kind of love among believers is rare today. But it is a key metric of a believer's quality. Show others this love by sacrificing for them from a true heart. Pray genuinely for others, correct those who are straying, even if it costs you. Share your life with others. When you do this, you will easily pass the believers' quality assurance test.

Pray: Father, help me to love others as You love me in Jesus' name.

UNLIKELY PATH TO GLORY

"When he had gone out, Jesus said, 'Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.'" John 13:31-32 ESV

People seldom waste their words when death stares them in the face. The words of a dying man are important. After Judas left the Last Supper to betray Jesus, Jesus began a series of crucial teachings. These were the last words of Jesus before facing the cross.

In this passage, Jesus seemed to be breathing a sigh of relief that His mission was about to end in glory. Then, He shared two crucial things about glory. The first is that the Son's glory is connected to the Father's glory. The second one is that when the Son glorifies the Father, the Father will glorify the Son.

Everyone desires glory from God. There is much prayer for God to bring people into glory. But many people live lives that do not bring glory to the Father. Yet they seek that the Father bring glory to their lives. Jesus clearly stated here that our glory is tied to how we glorify God in our lives. A life that dishonours God cannot receive glory from God.

Do you also desire glory from God? Have you spent considerable time petitioning heaven to release glory upon your life? This is your lucky day! Jesus provides a clear answer to your prayers in this passage: glorify God with your life, and you will be glorified by God. From today, begin to seek ways to glorify God through your life, words and actions.

Pray: Father, I receive Your grace to live a life that glorifies You every day in Jesus' name.

GAIN THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE

"And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." Luke 24:27 ESV

Perspective and understanding are so important that they can make a pleasant situation feel unpleasant and make an unpleasant situation bearable. It was the Lord Jesus' surprising response to the disciples' confusion after His resurrection. It is worth noting.

After the harrowing death of Jesus, there was a day of silence, confusion, uncertainty and likely despair. The disciples' hope that Jesus was the Messiah seemed to have been dashed. Then, some women came announcing that Jesus is risen. This may have added to their confusion. So Jesus Himself came and expounded the scriptures to them about Himself.

Believers have different experiences in the world. Some experiences leave us permanently changed. But instead of despairing, Jesus consistently redirected His disciples' attention to the Scriptures. It provided clarity and perspective as they navigated the situation. With the right understanding, they would have the right responses.

You may be having deeply disappointing experiences, but rather than despair and being troubled, seek understanding and perspective from the scriptures. It may be the last thing you want to do, but it is the right thing. It will align your heart with the Lord and help you respond appropriately in that situation.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

"If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ." Romans 5:17 ESV

It is often said that Jesus is the answer, but what is the question? Jesus is the solution, but what is the problem? We cannot fully appreciate the answer or the solution when we have not reflected well on the question or the problem.

When God made man, He gave him two instructions: to rule the land but not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:15-17). But Man was deceived by the devil into disobeying the second instruction. This disobedience has since become the trademark of humans. Our hearts disobey God by default. Scripture is replete with examples of this. It is called death.

Then came Jesus. He obeyed God even though it led to the cross and suffering. He became what the original man could never be. He lived and ruled. He became the perfect picture of God's intention. He became the perfecting agent of God's restoration in a dead world. He became the perfect saviour of a people who had become dead through sin.

Your right response is to have a deep relationship with Jesus. He is perfect, and perfects. The relationship resets you, enabling you to live and rule. Every part of your life will begin to look like it was originally intended by God. This process is called resurrection.

WHEN YOU ARE BETRAYED

"After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.'" John 13:21 ESV

Have you ever been betrayed? It is one of the most terrible experiences anyone could face. But Jesus experienced betrayal from His ministry's treasurer, a very close companion who had lived with Him for about three years. It was a troubling experience.

Judas left the last meal to betray Jesus to the Chief priests and scribes. He had eaten with the Lord and drunk with Him. But when a thought from the devil possessed him, he left to finalise the arrangements for his betrayal. The knowledge of this troubled Jesus' heart at this already heavy meeting. Judas went on to betray Jesus with a kiss.

Betrayal often strikes the heart with incredulity. Why did this person betray me? What did I do wrong? Why was it him or her, of all people? Even the Lord Jesus was not immune from the heart-troubling effect of betrayal. But He still washed Judas' feet and shared a meal with him. He did not call him out; He simply lived with this tension in Himself.

Betrayal feels terrible. It hurts the soul and bruises the spirit. It makes the heart heavy and embitters it. But if, despite feeling some of these emotions, Jesus was without resentment, then God calls you to reflect and emulate Christ's example. When you are betrayed, relax and don't hate. Follow the example of Jesus, who kept loving in the face of betrayal.

SO LONG A NIGHT

"Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him." John 13:5 ESV

This night was a special night. It was the last night with His disciples. It was the last meal. After this night, the disciples will be ready for commissioning for their assignments. Yet there were still significant lessons to be taught. Everyone's heart was heavy.

Before the meal, Jesus put off His outer garment, wrapped a towel around Him, poured water into a basin, and began washing and drying His disciples' feet. They were puzzled, but none spoke except Peter, who wanted to refuse this service of His Master and Lord. But Jesus refused and succeeded in washing everyone's feet.

This practice was against the background of woes earlier pronounced against the Jewish temple leaders. That system failed because the leadership served themselves rather than God or the people. He came and demonstrated that leaders ought to serve their followers. Believers were also to serve each other.

The situation has not changed much today. Leadership in the Church often looks like the outside, where leaders expect to be served rather than to serve. This makes many desire leadership positions so as to be served. But you must not be like that. Seek to serve in whatever capacity God has placed you in His body. Doing so will be like washing others' feet.

Pray: Father, grant me a heart that seeks to serve others and not to be served in Jesus' name.
