Summary of fiqh of Fidyah
(Feeding in place of fasting)
Assalaamu 'alaykum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh.
As for those asking about fidyah (feeding a fasting Muslim needy in place of fasting, for those permitted by the Sharee'ah to do that (due to illnesses without hope of recovery, old age and so on));
1. the measurement is half saa'i of staple food (like rice) per day which is equivalent to 2 muddu-n-Nabiyyi.
2. This is equivalent to approximately 1,500.00naira for a day (at least), times the number of days to be missed.
3. For example, if you are to miss 30days, it will be minimum of 1500 × 30days = 45,000.00naira *minimum for the month*.
4. It can be done on behalf of a wife, husband, aged parents etc.
5. The feeding has to be done in Ramadaan and not outside Ramadaan.
6. It can be done everyday or all at once for a single person or multiple people, either a the beginning of Ramadaan or later within the days of Ramadaan.
7. For those of us in the diaspora or in a location where you can't easily find a needy to feed, you can get intouch with me via call or WhatsApp message to help you out in shaa Allaah (Imaam AbuLabeebah +2348060142796).
8. As for those who are indebted to do fidyah and aren't capable due to constraints of lack of capability should give what they are capable of (even if the situation is worse to the level of just capable of giving water alone, it should be given).
9. If they aren't capable of anything, scholars said they may leave it as Allaah doesn't emburden anyone beyond his/her capacity (but do not forget that Allaah Himself knows your capacity).
10. Whoever is owing some previous fasts and didn't pay up till another Ramadaan commences like this, must *compulsorily feed a needy Muslim* alongside fasting everyday, throughout the days of Ramadaan, as a Kafaarah (atonement) for delaying paying back. After which he/she will now pay back the missed fast again after Ramadaan is over. The feeding is just a punishment for the delay in paying back.
Allaah knows best.
May Allaah accept our 'ibaadaat
