St. John Eudes (Optional Memorial)

First Reading Judges 9:6-15

At that time: All the citizens of Shechem came together and all Beth-mill, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and carried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you. The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘reign over us.’ “But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my fatness, by which gods and men are honoured, and go to sway over the trees?’ “And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’ “But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to sway over the trees?’ “And the trees said to the vine, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’ ‘But the vine said to them, ‘shall I leave my wine which cheers gods and men, and go to sway over the trees?” “Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come you, and reign over us.’ “And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ The Word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 21:2-7

Response: In your strength, O Lord, the king rejoices.

In your strength, O Lord, the king rejoices;

How greatly your salvation makes him glad!

You have granted him his heart’s desires;

You have not withheld the prayer of his lips.

You came to meet him with blessings of prosperity;

You have set on his head a crown of pure gold.

He asked you for life and this you have given:

Days that will last form age to age.

By your saving help great is his glory;

You have bestowed upon him majesty and splendor;

You have granted him blessings for ever,

Made him rejoice with the joy of your presence.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia Alleluia

The word of the Lord is living and active,

Discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Gospel Matthew 20:1-16a

At that time: Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. “And going out about the third hour he said others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, “You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. “Going out again about the sixth and the ninth hour, he did the same. “And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ “They said to him, ‘because no one has hired us.’ “He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ “And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ “And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ “But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.” The Gospel of the Lord

‘If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, otherwise, you are worse than he is’

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

If someone has done you injury

by Augustine of
Hippo (354-430 AD)

“If someone has done you injury and you have
suffered, what should be done?

You have heard
the answer already in today’s scripture: ‘If your
brother sins against you, go and tell him his
fault, between you and him alone.’ If you fail to
do so, you are worse than he is. He has done
someone harm, and by doing harm he has
stricken himself with a grievous wound. Will you
then completely disregard your brother’s wound?
Will you simply watch him stumble and fall
down? Will you disregard his predicament? If so,
you are worse in your silence than he in his
abuse. Therefore, when any one sins against us,
let us take great care, but not merely for
ourselves. For it is a glorious thing to forget
injuries. Just set aside your own injury, but do
not neglect your brother’s wound. Therefore ‘go
and tell him his fault, between you and him
alone,’ intent upon his amendment but sparing
his sense of shame. For it might happen that
through defensiveness he will begin to justify his
sin, and so you will have inadvertently nudged
him still closer toward the very behavior you
desire to amend. Therefore ‘tell him his fault
between you and him alone. If he listens to you,
you have gained your brother,’ because he might
have been lost, had you not spoken with him. ”

2nd Corinthians 8:1-9

We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of God which has been shown in the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favour of taking part in the relief of the saints- and this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. According we have urged Titus that

St. John Francis Regis June 16

… A young man enraged that the saint had converted and drawn from him the object of his impure passion, resolved to kill him. The man of God discovered by a divine light his wicked intention, and said to him: “Dear brother, why do you bear this ill-will to one that would hazard his life to procure you the greatest of blessings, eternal salvation?” The sinner, overcome by his sweetness, fell at his feet, begged his pardon, and became a sincere convert. Three other young noblemen, on a like occasion, resolved revenge Regis met them with courage, saying to them: “You come with a design upon my life. What concerns me is not death, which is the object of my wishes: but the state of damnation that you are in, and regard so little.” The libertines stood as if stunned: Regis embracing them with the tenderness of a parent, induced them to repent; and they ..continue reading @ www.stpeterota.info

Saint Germaine Cousin June 15

…When her body was exhumed forty years later, it was found to be undecayed, what is known as incorruptible. As is often the case with incorruptible bodies of saints,

God chooses not the outwardly beautiful to preserve but those that others despised as ugly and weak. It’s as if God is saying in this miracle that human ideas of beauty are not his. To him, no one was more beautiful than this humble lonely young woman. Continue reading at www.stpeterota.info

What is the Eucharist?

The Eucharist is both a sacrament and a sacrifice. The Eucharist is a sacrament, an outward sign in and through which we meet Jesus who shares His life of grace with us.

In this work of grace, we enter a radical and life-changing discipleship and friendship with Jesus, a friendship that begins with knowing Jesus with a firm conviction, radical conversion and a deep fidelity nurtured by a daily reading of the Word and frequent worthy reception of the Eucharist.
