CBCN HOSTING 2026: OSOGBO DIOCESE GETS SET!
The Catholic Diocese of Osogbo continues to intensify preparations for the hosting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) scheduled for September this year. As part of efforts to ensure a successful and well-coordinated event, the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, paid an assessment visit to the diocese to evaluate the level of preparedness for the historic gathering.
During the visit, Very Rev. Fr. Banjo held a meeting with the heads of committees of the Local Organizing Committee, where various committees presented reports on the progress made in their different areas of responsibility. The presentations highlighted the dedication, sacrifices, and enormous efforts already invested in ensuring that the conference is successfully hosted.
After the meeting, the Secretary General toured the various facilities and project sites prepared for the event. Having inspected the available facilities and listened to the reports presented, he expressed great satisfaction with the level of preparation and organization already put in place by the diocese.
He commended the commitment, teamwork, and hard work of the various committees and the entire diocesan community, describing the efforts as highly impressive and encouraging. He further urged all committees to sustain the momentum as preparations continue towards welcoming bishops from across the nation.

KNOW CHRIST, LIVE YOUR FAITH — BISHOP OYEJOLA TO STUDENTS

The Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS), Osogbo Diocese, hosted a spiritually enriching “Weekend with the Lord" program, presided over by Most Rev. John Oyejola, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, alongside Rev. Fr. PeterPaul Akinola, the diocesan chaplain.
In his address, Bishop Oyejola challenged participants on the true meaning of fasting, particularly during the Lenten season. He questioned how many faithfully observe the discipline, noting that while individuals with health conditions such as ulcers may be excused, many others fail to take the practice seriously. He urged the faithful to renew their commitment to fasting with sincerity and spiritual purpose.

Emphasizing charity, the Bishop encouraged Catholic students to cultivate the habit of giving, especially to the poor. He stressed that no act of giving is too small and reminded them that generosity attracts God’s abundant blessings. He further urged them to move beyond a culture of just receiving to one of selfless giving.
Reflecting on what it means to truly know someone, Bishop Oyejola explained that familiarity enables one to understand and even predict a person’s actions. He noted that Jesus Christ desires such a deep and personal relationship with His followers. Referencing the day’s Gospel, he highlighted that Philip knew Christ and reminded the congregation that although Jesus assumed human nature, He remains divine and without sin.

He further stated that the primary purpose of the gathering was to enable participants to have a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Citing Philippians 3:9–10, he urged attendees to seek a personal experience of Christ rather than relying solely on others for spiritual growth.

Participants were also encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, recognizing that faith defines one’s identity. The Bishop stressed that life’s purpose goes beyond material pursuits such as wealth and marriage, pointing instead to the ultimate goal of knowing Jesus Christ, who reveals the true meaning of life.

Outlining practical ways to grow closer to Christ, he emphasized the importance of prayer, fasting, and active participation in faith-building activities. He reminded the congregation that the Catholic faith is one that seeks understanding and called on all to trust in Jesus in every aspect of life.

Quoting Christ’s invitation to those who are burdened, he reassured the faithful of God’s promise of rest and encouraged them to make conscious efforts to listen to Him. As the Church prepares for Pentecost, he concluded by urging greater attentiveness to the Holy Spirit.

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. PeterPaul Akinola appreciated the Bishop for his fatherly support, he welcome the Provincial President in the person of Mr. Michael Ajekiigbe and commended the students for their sincere communion with God throughout the program. He encouraged them to partake regularly in the Holy Eucharist as a means of strengthening their spiritual lives.
