Inspiring Commentary:

Jonathan felt very strongly that God was leading him, and his confrontation with the Philistines was a bold adventure. But before Jonathan attacked, he had to be very sure that God had given the enemy into his hands.

There are times when we are required to act without waiting for public opinion, but we should make sure that God is leading us. At such points, we may be tempted to think through all the options, sometimes even trying to think for every other person. But what is required here is for us to seek the face of God and deal with the situation as He directs.

The victory that Jonathan had was indeed God’s providence, for how else could the presence of only two men have caused a great panic in the enemy’s camp that is full of thousands of men? But God’s victory does not depend on numbers or military strength; it depends on the strength of His presence, before which no one can stand. Though He may not answer as we anticipate, the truth is that He does not deny us the victory we need at any time. We need to learn that God brings us up as His children the way He sees as best.
