Text: Acts 1:8;2:1-8;14-18,36-41;9:1-3,17-19;Ephesians 5:18-20
Acts 1:8-
But ye shall receive power, after f that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 2:1-8-
Acts 2:1-8 KJV
[1] … And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord a in one place. [2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. [3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [5] And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. [6] Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. [7] And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? [8] And how hear we every man in our own tongue, e wherein we were born?
14-18-
Acts 2:14-18 KJV
[14] But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judæa, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: [15] For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. [16] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; [17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: [18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
36-41-
Acts 2:36-41 KJV
[36] Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. [37] Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? [38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [39] For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. [40] And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. [41] Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 9:1-3 KJV
[1] … And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter a against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, [2] And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. [3] And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
17-19-
Acts 9:17-19 KJV
[17] And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. [18] And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. [19] And when he had received meat, h he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.
Eph 5:18-20-
Ephesians 5:18-20 KJV
[18] And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; j but be filled with the Spirit; [19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; [20] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Key Verse: Ephesians 5:18-20
And be not drunk with wine , wherein is excess; but be filled with the spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. (KJV)
>>Focus
Your students needs to be deliberately taught the importance of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, and how it can impact not only their words but their whole lives. As a Sunday school teacher, one of your greatest privileges is introducing students what the Bible has to say about the Holy Spirit. It's equally one of your highest honours to demonstrate the work of the Holy Spirit through your life and example.
As you prepare for this study , consider whether your students can sense the Holy Spirit in your words, Attitudes and lifestyle. If your answer is "Yes", ask God to use those things to spark hunger in your student's hearts. If your answer is probably "no", ask God to draw you closer to Him and fill you with His Power in such a way that it will be evident to everyone around you.
>>The Basic Message: Explain to students…
• WHATS THE BIG IDEA?
Being baptized in the Holy Spirit injects our speech with praise, purpose, passion and power.
• WHY DOES IT MATTER?
We need the power of the Holy Spirit to help us proclaim God's truth to Spiritually lost people.
• HOW DO I LIVE IT?
Ask God to baptism You in the Holy Spirit and help you to live a spiritual- filled life.
>> Activity Option: AMPLIFIED
Bring a magaphone to class and permit several students to demonstrate the device. (Be careful not to make so much noise as to disrupt other classes.) Talk about what would happen if you tried to address a packed stadium or concert hall without some type of equipment to amplify your voice. Point out that, in a sense, the baptism in the Holy Spirit "amplifies" our testimonies of the gospel.
>>Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers...
• How being baptized in the Holy Spirit will impact our speech
• How the baptism in the Holy Spirit empowers us to witness for Jesus while inspiring us to worship Christ.
• What it means to live a spirit-filled life
•Why the baptism in the Holyspirit is intended for every believer.
>> Inform and Discuss
a. Power to Witness
1.Read or have a volunteer read Acts1:8. What do you know about the baptism in the Holy Spirit? (Guide: After allowing time for discussion, explain that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a special gift from God. It gives us power to be witnesses for Jesus and passion to worship Him.)
2. Read or have a volunteer read Acts 2:1-8. Why do you think God chose speaking in tongues to be the sign of Holy Spirit baptism ? (Hint: While the Bible doesn't explicitly explain why , it is interesting to know that the Bible teaches " no man can tame the tongue" (James 3:8). Yet, God can take control with the one thing we cannot - our speech. This shows that the power of the Holy Spirit can help us control our words so we can be witnesses for God ).
3. Read or have a volunteer read Acts2: 14-18. Point out that Peter boldly proclaimed how the miracle they've seen was a fulfillment of God's promise. Then discuss: why is boldness important when it comes to telling others about Jesus? (Hints: it is not always easy to talk about your faith. Fears and doubts can keep you from sharing what God has done in your life. Boldness from the Holy Spirit helps you overcome those fears and doubts to be a strong witness. )
4. Read or have a volunteer read Acts 2:36-41. Point out that Peter had fearfully denied his association with Jesus a few weeks earlier ( see Luke 22:54-62.) Now, full of the Holy Spirit, Peter humbly "pleaded with them" (Acts2:40) to turn from their sins and accept the forgiveness Jesus offers. Then discuss : why is it important for us to remain full of the Holy Spirit?
>> Hints: when we stay full of the Holy Spirit, we will share God's concern for those who are spiritually lost, speaking words that reflect the Lord's love, mercy and righteousness. The Holy Spirit fills us with a passion to tell others about Jesus. That passion is what motivates us to step out from where we are and speak to the crowds, tell our friends what Jesus has done for us and be a witness in every thing we do and say.
b. Passion to worship
>>Guide:Explain that the apostle Paul (formerly known as Saul) was another person empowered far beyond his natural abilities. His life was filled with amazing contrasts; he went from destroyer to disciple, persecutor to preacher and murderer to missionary. What made the difference for Paul was his relationship with Jesus and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
1. Read or have a volunteer read Acts 9:1-3. What do Saul's (Paul's) Words tell us about his spiritual condition? (Hints: Saul's words reflected a man who was not right with God. According to Acts 9:1, his speech was filled with violence and anger. Such words can reveal a lot about a person's heart. If you are full of rage , vengeance, jealousy , bitterness and selfishness or lust, your speech will be tainted with those things. But if you are full of the Holy Spirit, your words will glorify God. )
2. Read or have a volunteer read Acts 9:17-19. Discuss how Saul's life might have changed at that moment. (Note that after Saul's encounter with Ananias, he immediately began telling people about Jesus , and they were amazed about what happened in his life. (See Acts 20:31) And when we place our faith in Jesus, and are baptized in the Holy Spirit , there will be a noticeable change. Like Saul , we'll have a passion to reach the lost and worship Jesus with our words and lives. )
3. Read or have a volunteer read Ephesians 5:18-20. How should being baptized in the Holy Spirit affect our speech? (Hint: The baptism in the Holy Spirit does more than just empower us. It also enhances our worship. When we allow the Holy Spirit to direct our praise and exalt Christ through us, we are drawn into His presence and get a glimpse of intimacy with us that He desires. )
4. Brainstorm specific ways our words will change and our worship will be enhanced by the Holy Spirit. ( Note that the Spirit will help us put aside hurtful, damaging , and ungodly speech. Such words can preoccupy our thoughts. But the Spirit fills our hearts- and mouths -with godly words. Then we can focus better on praising God freely.)
>>Involve Them: LIP SERVICE
Distribute paper and pens or pencils. Instruct students to answer the following honestly:
•When I have a bad day I'm likely to...(a. Whine about the injustice of life. b. Pray and thank God for the blessings in my life. c. Lash out verbally at those around d. Yell and throw things.)
•When someone becomes argumentative, I usually...(a. Try to say something that would please God. b. Silence him or her with a ready insult. c. Get angry and defensive. d. Say things I later regret. )
•I'm most likely to be overheard ... (a. Talking about sport , clothes , or entertainment. b. Gossiping c. Telling people about Jesus and praising God. d. Complaining. )
•When I talk to an unsaved person , I usually ... (a. Try to steer the conversation around Jesus b. Keep it light , avoiding spiritual topics. c. Don't want him or her to know I'm a Christian. c. Try to end the conversation as quickly as possible.)
• Now, what do my answers reveal about my speech?
>>Inspire Them : Remind students THE BASIC MESSAGE of this study(pg..), explaining WHAT the big idea behind the study is; WHY it matters; and HOW we can live the lesson captured in this study.
>>Invitation Option: Close the Session by praying for students who are seeking the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Also offer to pray with any student who is struggling with his or her speech. Challenge those who have asked for prayers to stay faithfully in seeking God for their requests, whether they are to be baptized in the Holy Spirit or to invite the Holy Spirit to take control of their speech everyday.
>>Teacher Hint: Ask yourself ...
1. Do students understand how the Holy Spirit can impact their speech ?
2. Can they explain how the Holy Spirit affects their witness and worship?
3. Were students given the opportunity to seek to be baptized in the Holy Spirit ?
