The Blessing That Followed God’s Choice
Bible Verse:
“And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.”
Genesis 48:14
Bible Context:
Jacob was old, weak, and nearing the end of his life.
Joseph brought his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to receive their grandfather’s blessing.
He positioned them according to birth order.
Manasseh, the firstborn, stood toward Jacob’s right hand, where the greater blessing was expected.
Ephraim, the younger, stood toward his left.
But Jacob crossed his hands.
He placed his right hand upon Ephraim and his left hand upon Manasseh.
Joseph thought his father had made a mistake and tried to correct him.
Jacob refused.
The Bible says Jacob guided his hands “wittingly.”
He understood what he was doing and blessed them according to God’s purpose rather than human custom.
Bible Truth:
Genesis 48:14 teaches us that God’s purpose is not controlled by natural order, tradition, or human expectation.
Joseph’s arrangement made sense according to custom.
But God’s plan did not follow that arrangement.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly worked beyond human preference.
He chose Isaac rather than Ishmael.
He chose Jacob rather than Esau.
He chose David, the youngest of Jesse’s sons.
Now Ephraim received the greater blessing instead of Manasseh.
His wisdom is higher than ours.
People judge by age, position, appearance, background, or natural advantage.
God sees the heart, the future, and the purpose He intends to accomplish.
What This Teaches Us:
1. God Is Not Limited By Human Order
Joseph arranged his sons according to tradition, but Jacob crossed his hands.
What people place first is not always what God chooses first.
No title, status, or family position can prevent the Lord’s purpose.
2. God’s Blessing Is An Expression Of Grace
Ephraim did not receive the greater blessing because he had earned it.
The choice revealed God’s grace.
We also receive salvation and spiritual life not because of personal merit, but through mercy in Jesus Christ.
Grace leaves no room for boasting.
3. What Looks Wrong May Be God’s Direction
Joseph saw crossed hands and assumed a mistake had been made.
But Jacob knew what he was doing.
God’s direction may sometimes differ from our plans.
We must not call something wrong merely because it does not match our expectation.
4. God Sees Beyond The Present
Joseph saw two young sons before an old man.
God saw tribes, generations, and a future not yet revealed.
We see only part of the story, but the Lord sees the whole.
His decisions are never based on incomplete knowledge.
5. Our Plans Must Remain Surrendered
Joseph prepared the moment carefully, yet he still had to accept God’s decision.
Planning is wise, but our plans must remain open to God.
Faith says, “Lord, order my steps according to Your will, even when Your choice differs from mine.”
Life Application:
You may feel that someone else has the natural advantage.
They may appear more qualified, better positioned, or further ahead.
Do not believe that human order can cancel God’s purpose for your life.
The Lord is able to place His hand upon whom He chooses.
At the same time, do not become jealous when God blesses another person differently.
Manasseh was still blessed, even though Ephraim received the greater portion.
Trust His wisdom.
Release the need to control how every promise must be fulfilled.
Present your plans to God, but allow Him to rearrange what must be rearranged and lead you according to His purpose.
In Christ, your identity is not determined by family position, past limitations, or human approval.
God’s grace can reach you, establish you, and use your life in ways no one expected.
Remain humble, faithful, and surrendered beneath His hand.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You because Your wisdom is higher than mine. Forgive me for depending on human order, comparison, and expectation. Help me trust Your choices even when I do not understand them. Deliver me from jealousy and the desire to control every outcome. Teach me to surrender my plans, honour the blessings of others, and rest in Your grace. Let Your purpose be fulfilled in my life through Jesus Christ. Amen.🙏
