BOXING DAY: A DAY OF MANIFESTING LOVE
Growing up as a child, I thought that Boxing Day was a day set aside for boxers to showcase their skills. Little did I know that it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.
Boxing Day, also known as Offering Day, originated from the United Kingdom as a day to donate gifts to the poor and needy. It is celebrated on 26th December, the day after Christmas. It is a holiday that comes from a tradition of gifting boxed gifts to the poor and those in need. Today it has become an integral part of Christmas.
In the early Church, on this day, which is St. Stephen's Day, collection boxes were opened and the moneys inside them were given to the poor and those in need.
Today, the call is for us to show love to others through caring for them and sharing what we have with them. God first showed us love by gifting us His only Son who came down from heaven and took our human form in order to bring salvation to humanity.
By implication, this is a call to action rather than confession. SHOW LOVE TODAY.
