Parish gossip is when people in a church talk about others in a way that is harmful or inaccurate. It can damage reputations and social bonds, and poison hearts.

In Catholicism, gossip is considered a sin against the eighth commandment, which states "you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor".
Speaking gossip is an attack on someone's reputation, while listening to gossip can warp how you think about others.
The Catechism lists "Rash Judgment" as a sin against the eighth commandment. Rash Judgment is when you think the worst of people.
Pope Francis' message
Pope Francis has warned that gossip damages social bonds and poisons hearts. He has encouraged people to practice self-accusation rather than accusing others.
Bible verses about gossip
Proverbs 17:9a states "He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends".
Proverbs 20:19 states "He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, therefore do not associate with a gossip".
