Have You Asked
(Excerpt from Rise )
James 4:2 NIV
“You do not have because you do not ask God.”
Sometimes we sit in silence, carrying heavy desires in our hearts prayers we’ve formed but never released. We assume God already knows (and yes, He does), yet He still longs for us to ask. Not because He is unaware, but because asking builds relationship, dependence, and trust.
There are moments we feel unworthy to ask. Other times, we fear disappointment, so we choose silence over vulnerability. But God is not intimidated by your desires, your confusion, or even your doubts. He invites you openly, lovingly “Ask.”
There is a massive difference between wishing/ desiring for something and asking for it. Wishing is passive; it’s a v***r that floats around our minds. Asking is an act of relationship. It requires us to stop looking at our own hands and start looking at His.
Sometimes we don’t ask because we think we’re being "low maintenance" for God. We don’t want to bother Him with the "small stuff" the stressful meeting, the recurring insecurity, and so on. But when we refuse to ask, we aren't being polite; we’re being self-sufficient. We are essentially saying, "I’ve got this part covered, God. I’ll call You when it gets really bad." You asking is to help you discover what to do to see the manifestation of your desires.
Think about a child. A child doesn’t wait until they are starving and destitute to ask their parent for a snack. They ask because they know the relationship they have. They ask because they expect a response.
Jesus invited us into that same simplicity. He didn’t say, "Analyze the situation until you find a solution." He said, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7). Asking is not a sign of weakness; it is a posture of faith. It says, “God, I believe You are able. I believe You care. I believe You are listening.”
God isn’t a vending machine, and "asking" isn't a magic formula to get exactly what we want, when we want it. But asking is the bridge to peace. It’s the moment we transfer the weight from our shoulders to His. When we ask, we acknowledge that He is the Source and we are the branches.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 7 are a promise that when we ask for God, He gives us Himself. When we humbly seek God, He finds us. And when we come to Him as we are, He welcomes us with open arms.
When we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. And when He draws near, He transforms the way we think, renews our minds, restores our souls, and leads us down paths that are for our good and His glory.
Don’t let pride, fear, or doubt keep you from what God is willing to give. Your Father is not distant He is near, attentive, and ready to respond.
Confession:
Today, I’m stopping the striving. I am bringing need to You. I’m not just wishing for it; I’m asking for Your help, Your wisdom, and Your will. Thank You for listening. Amen.
