CGMI ADULTS SUNDAY SCHOOL MANUAL

CENTRAL THOUGHT:
Believers who endure to the end
will have eternal life.

DATE: 6TH OCTOBER, 2024

HYMN: Praise to the Lord the Almighty

TOPIC: HONOUR, RESPECT AND COURTESY BY THE BODY OF CHRIST

TEXT: 1 Sam.2:30; Rom.12:10; 1Pet.2:17; Rev.4:9-11.

INTRODUCTION:
Honour, respect, and courtesy are three words that are fast disappearing from the vocabulary of some especially in this age of
*civilization". Age long biblical beliefs and practices are being sacrificed on the altar of modernity. The result is that godly principles are being laid aside and it is
affecting man's relationship with God and other men.
Believers in Christ make up the Body of Christ. The ease with which interpersonal relations break down even among Christians may be traceable to the absence of honour, respect and courtesy.
This also has affected the way
some people relate with God
Himself. They see God- the
Creator and Possessor of the
universe as one they can approach carelessly and take for granted. They are arrogant in God's presence and dishonour Him by being engaged in carnal activities
when they are supposed to be
worshipping God their Redeemer. God is a loving Father, but like He says in Mal. 1:6, "if then I be a Father., where is mine honour?". The focus of this lesson is to
reacquaint ourselves with these concepts as a way of amending our relationship with God and others.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of this lesson are to:
1. understand the meaning of the terms honour, respect, and courtesy;
2. know who to honour and respect;
3. outline ways in which people dishonour God in the church and in life;
4. outline ways to show respect and courtesy;
5. understand the consequences of not honouring and respecting God and man; and
6. identify some benefits of showing honour and respect to God and man.

BIBLE TRUTH:
Q1. WHAT DO THE TERMS HONOUR, RESPECT, AND
COURTESY MEAN?

HONOUR: the word honour means to have high respect, great esteem for someone, and the quality of knowing and taking the morally right action. It also means to treat
someone with admiration and give special recognition to him or her. It talks about giving public praise to, worshiping and seeing the person as worthy. Honour can be given to God and man.(John 5:23; 1Pet.2:17).

RESPECT: this is a feeling of deep admiration for someone as a result of his abilities, qualities, or
achievements. This is probably why it is said that respect has to be earned.
However, respect can also mean showing due regard for the feelings of others.

• COURTESY: this is a show of politeness in attitude and
behaviour towards others, having polished manners and good social conduct. It also means to acknowledge the rights and worth of other people. (I Pet.3:8).

Q2. WHO SHOULD BE HON0URED AND RESPECTED?

I. God: The Bible clearly states that we are to honour God. Respect for God is included in honouring Him
and if we truly honour Him, it will show in our attitude and behaviour towards Him. Ps.22:23; John 5:23; John 12:26; Rev. 5:12-13; Rev. 4: 9-11, Rev. 7:12 are some of the
Bible verses that talk about
honouring God

ii. Our parents: Ex. 20:12 and
Eph. 6:1-2 are scriptures that
expressly state that we are to
honour our parents. This is a
command that has a blessing
attached to it. Honouring our
parents is not predicated on
whether they are rich, educated or even Christians.

iii. The elderly and widows indeed: we are instructed by God to honour the elderly (Lev. 19:32) and those who are indeed widows (1Tim.5:3).

iv. Church leaders: we are to
honour the leaders God has placed over us in the church. In fact, the Bible says that those who rule well and labour in the word and doctrine should be given double
honour (1Tim. 5:17; Heb.13:17)

V. Everyone: we are to honour all men (1Pet.2:17; Rom.12:10)

vi. Those in authority (Government and Kings): God expects us to honour those in authority because all powers that be are ordained by
God (Rom.13:1-7; Heb. 13:17)

vii. Marriage and our spouses: Heb. 13:4 (GNB) says "marriage is to be
honoured by all, and husbands
and wives must be faithful to
each other...". IPet. 3:7 talks about honouring our spouse.

vi. Our bodies: The Bible clearly tells us that the Holy Spirit resides in our bodies and therefore they must be used to glorify God (2Tim. 2:21; 1Cor.6:19-20).

Q3. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE DISHONOUR GOD IN THE CHURCH AND IN LIFE ?

Some people dishonour God out of pride and ignorance. They do not understand who God is, how great and awesome He is. Therefore
when they come into His presence, they behave unseemingly. The Bible refers to God as the One who can kill both the body and destroy the soul and our Lord Jesus said we should fear Him (Matt.10:28). Some ways in which people dishonour God include:

a. Not hallowing God's name:
some people take the name of God in vain and even swear
falsely with His name. (Ex.20:7)

b. Coming before God in pride
e.g. putting their hands in their
pockets during praise and
worship, refusing to be a part
of the worship though in church. (Is. 13:11)

c. Talking and even disturbing
others while the sermon is being preached in church.(1Cor. 14:40).

d. Using phones by either making calls or browsing social media, or even recording themselves and
taking pictures during service.

e. Habitually and deliberately
coming late to church.

f. Refusing to obey lawful church oficials.

g. Lying, spreading gossip and
rumours, causing disunity among the brethren in church (Prov.12:22)

h. Refusal to obey Godly instructions given by spiritual leaders, causing contentions and divisions in church.

I. Giving to God carelessly without gratitude and reverence. (Gen.4:5 Ps. 50:12; Mal. 1:8)

j. Some men come to church to seek girls to defile and not for
godly relationships and vice
versa.

k. Lying and giving false testimony in church

L Taking the Lord's body (Holy communion) unworthily without first examining and purging
themselves as the Bible instructs (1 Cor. 11:28-29)

m. Politicising the things of
God, envy, strife, and division
(1Cor.3:3)

n. Introducing worldly practices and standards into the church; instead of the world emulating the church, some now want to give
validation to ungodly practices inside the church.

o. Not honouring God with our
wealth and position. (Prov.3:9)

p. Honouring God only with our lips while our hearts are far from Him (Is. 29:13; Matt. 15:8).

q. Finally, every act of
ungodliness/disobedience
engaged ln the church is
dishonouring the name of God
and the world now speaks evil
of the church as a result.

Q3B. WHAT ARE SOME PRACTICAL WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN SHOW RESPECT AND
COURTESY TO EACH OTHER? (Rom.12:9-18)

I) Think before you speak, be mindful of your tone and language

ii. Be kind and polite

iii. Listen to people, respect their opinions and beliefs

İv. Practice compassion

V. Respect the person and
properties of others

vi. Admit your mistakes when you are
wrong and be quick to apologise

vii. Greet people properly,
appropriate for their age and status

viii. Learn to use these powerful words "please, thank
you, excuse me, I am sorry"

ix. Dress appropriately and decently

X. Practice good communication skills

Xi. Put your phone away when
discussing with someone

xii. Be punctual and keep your word

xiii. Respond to text messages,
emails, and return phone calls
where appropriate.

xiv. Respect the privacy of others; do not pry into their personal life without being invited to do so.

XV. Speak up when someone else is being disrespected, do not be a part of it.

Q4. WHAT:ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT HONOURING GOD AND PEOPLE ?
Ps. 49:20 says "man that is in
honour and understandeth not, is like the beast that perish". The new birth in Christ does not only give us salvation, it is also meant to restore us to a place of honour. When we dishonour God and others, we become dishonourable
ourselves and are no better than wild beasts. Definitely God will not be pleased with such a person. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (1Pet. 5:5). The man who does not respect people will not be liked by anyone
and he may lose many good things and may even be in danger of losing his life(1 Sam. 25: 10-17). Anyone who persists in dishonouring God will obviously not make it into the kingdom of God.

Q5. WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS 0F HONOURING AND
RESPECTING GOD AND PEOPLE ?
God categorically stated in
1Sam.2:30 those who honour Me wilI I honour".The man who God honours is a great and blessed man indeed. Honour shall uphold the humble in spirit (Prov.29:23).
The one who shows honour and respect will also be honoured and respected by others - you reap what you sow. (Gal.6:7)

Persistent honouring of God will surely put the individual on the path of eternal life.
The class may mention others.

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:
Showing honour especially to God is something that every believer
must do. It is so important that God promises to honour us back if we honour Him. We should not be conformed to the standards of this decadent world where the love of many has waxed cold. We should let our light shine brightly by
honouring God and respecting
all we come across so that we can reap the benefits of honour.

MEMORY VERSE: 1Sam.2:30b:
"...for them that honour me will I honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed,"

*GRACE FOR MOMENTS OF CONTRADICTION*

*MATTHEW 11:1-4*

*And it came to pass when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:*

In our text above, John the Baptist was going through a moment of contradiction. He couldn’t understand why despite all He was going through, it seemed that Jesus was not doing anything about it. He thought of this so much that it made him start doubting if Jesus was truly the Saviour. This was the same John the Baptist who a while ago, had supernaturally recognized Jesus and boldly said “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” (John 1:29). He was a tough man with a very successful ministry. He prepared the way for the arrival and introduction of Jesus, (Luke 3:1-22).

Beloved, there will be times when situations of life and the way things may be going in the country will seem like a moment of contradiction, but the grace of God is upon you today. You will not lose your faith and focus on Jesus. You will be tempted to doubt in the dark, what you were told in the light. After God had called Abraham in Genesis 12, and given him His promises, in Genesis 15, Abraham was worried he had no child and he feared that one of his servants would be his heir. God reassured Abraham and Abraham’s faith was strengthened. Like Abraham, you will not stagger at the promises of God. You will remain strong in faith, giving glory to God. Against hope, you will believe in hope. You will be fully persuaded of God’s promises (Rom. 4:17-21).

*NEW WINE*

*JOHN 2:1-3, 7-8 …there was a marriage in Cana … and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. *Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up…. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.*

Jesus and His disciples were in a marriage feast and their wine ran out. By the wisdom of God, Jesus did not only provide them with wine, He provided them with one that was sweeter and better than what they had before, (John 2:9-10).

I see God using you to do this kind of miracle in various places and situations you will find yourself. Remember that you are in Christ and you have His life. Jesus said you will do the works He did and even greater works (John 14:12). In situations that seem difficult and hopeless, God will use you to provide supernatural solutions for people. God will use you to avert pain and embarrassment from the lives of people.

Just like Jesus, you will always know what to do, (John 6:6). By the Spirit of God in you, you can know the deep things in the mind of God, (1Cor. 2:10). You will know the right words to say, you will know what needs to be done. Through you, hope and life will be restored. Things will become better than they were before. The Bible shows us that by doing this miracle, Jesus was manifesting His glory, (John 2:11). Because you are there, you are a channel through which the will and glory of God will manifest in those lives and in that situation.

*PRAYER:*

*FATHER, I THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPERNATURAL POWER IN ME BY WHICH YOU USE ME TO PROVIDE HOPE AND SUPERNATURAL SOLUTIONS TODAY.*

*FERVENT AND EFFECTUAL PRAYERS*

*JAMES 5:17-18 (TPT) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.*

When we read the account of Elijah in our text above, sometimes, we are tempted to see him as a god or superhero. But we must not forget what precedes the comment of how he prayed concerning rain in the land. He was a man like us. This means we too can pray and have the same effect and results. Elijah’s prayer had an effect on the entire nation.

Another very important fact is that this prayer of Elijah was simply in line with God’s word, (1 Kings 17:1, 1 Kings 18:1). It was not just Elijah’s desire and decision. It is okay for us to have desires for our nation, but our prayers must be in line with God’s word and His declarations. We must hear the sound of abundance (have an assurance of the reality and manifestation of that word), we must declare it, and we must pray about it until the manifestation comes.

If for anything, you have something more than what Elijah had. You have the life of Christ and God has given you His righteousness because of Christ, (2 Cor. 5:21). Elijah was a man like us, but we are not just men like Elijah. We are one with Christ and our prayer is in the name (authority) of Jesus. There is no reason why God will deny us what we are praying for. Our prayers shall have great effects on our nation. Don’t give up praying for this nation.

*PRAYER FOCUS:*

*THANK GOD FOR HIS GRACE AND BLESSINGS UPON THIS NATION. PRAY WITH GOD'S WORD FOR THE PEACE AND GROWTH OF THIS NATION.*

*WHAT SOUND ARE YOU HEARING?*

*1KINGS 18:1, 41-42 And it came to pass …, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. *And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. *So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees*

When Elijah told King Ahab that he heard the sound of an abundance of rain, he was not talking about a physical sound and he was not simply making a positive confession. The reason Elijah made this statement, was because God had told Elijah that He was going to send rain. Elijah had a positive attitude towards God’s word. God’s word was more real to him than everything else. He held on to God’s word because he knew that God was not a man that He should lie. Numbers 23:19 (GNB) says “God is not like people, who lie; He is not a human who changes his mind. Whatever he promises, he does; He speaks, and it is done.”

As Elijah held on more and more to God’s word, God’s word became more real to him. Even before the rain fell physically, in the spirit, Elijah was hearing the rain falling. If this could happen to Elijah, what do you think your experience should be? Do you know that because of Christ, God has already fulfilled all His promises to you? (2Co.1:20) Along with Christ, God has freely given you all things, (Rom.8:32).

At every given point in time, your life is meant to be filled with hope – an assurance of a divine expectation based on God’s promises and word. What revelation of Christ/ the promises of God are you holding onto right now? Can you hear the sound of their coming manifestation?

*ACTION POINT:*

*THANK GOD FOR HIS PROMISES AND THE THINGS HE HAS DONE FOR YOU IN CHRIST. DECLARE THEM AND SEE THEM MANIFEST IN YOUR LIFE.*

Good morning friends of God. September remains our month to focus on Christ for grace to pray in the Spirit . Eph 6:18, Rom 8:26, Jude 20

Enjoy a lovely Sunday
You are the best.

*THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2024*

*THE POWER OF UNDERSTANDING THE LOVE AND GRACE OF GOD (1)*

*JEREMIAH 31:3, PSALMS 130:3-4 (KJV, GNB)*
*The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. *If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. *If you kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned? But you forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of you.*

So many people are ignorant of the love and grace of God. The love of God is supernatural and as we grow in our understanding of it, it greatly impacts and transforms our lives.

As our second text above says, the major reason God wants us to fear (reverence) Him is because of His love. The major way God manifested and demonstrated His love to us, was by sending Jesus to die for us, even when we were sinners/His enemies, (Rom.5:8). What a love! It is only as we focus on Christ and all God has done for us through Him, that we can truly understand the love of God.

Some people wrongly think that the more one understands the love and grace of God, the more that person would live a reckless and sinful life; but this is not true. For example, there is a point to which someone great can show you love and kindness - which you know you don’t deserve, and you will become so shy and feel indebted to them. You will not want to hurt them in any way, and you will always desire to do anything possible to please them. This is how our understanding of the love and grace of God draws us to God and makes us want to please God, (Rom.12:1, NIV). Until we get to this point in our walk with God, we have not got a good understanding of the love and grace of God.

*PRAYER:*
*FATHER, I THANK YOU FOR THE ABUNDANT LOVE AND GRACE YOU HAVE SHOWN ME THROUGH CHRIST. PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM MORE.*
