RBT Passage: Esther 6-10

GLADNESS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

Memory Verse: "I rejoiced with those who said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the LORD. Psalm 122:1, NIV

Text: Psalm 122

Psalms 122:1-8 NIV
[1] I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

[2] Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem.

[3] Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together.

[4] That is where the tribes go up— the tribes of the Lord— to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel.

[5] There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

[6] Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure.

[7] May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” [8] For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.”

Saint Augustine wrote, "In the house of God, there is a never-ending festival; the angel choir makes an eternal holiday; the presence of God's face gives joy that never fails."

Psalm 122 is one of the fifteen songs of ascent, also called the pilgrim song. These songs are usually sung by Jews when they are traveling to the city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the place where the temple was built, and many Jews visited the city annually for the Jewish festival. This psalm begins with gladness for an invitation to God's house but is composed as a prayer for Jerusalem. The prayer focuses on the peace and prosperity of Jerusalem. God is omnipresent, but His presence is manifested in the midst of His people. When two or more people are gathered for prayer, worship, and fellowship around God's Word, the presence of God is there. In God's presence, there is fullness of joy.

Like the psalmist, we should be glad when we go to worship God in His house. As you pray, praise, and worship God in the beauty of His holiness, your burdens will be lifted and hard-pressed issues of life will melt away. So, learn to rejoice in the presence of the Lord. Let your sorrowful heart become joyful in His presence.

_________________________________
Insight: The presence of God in His house should make you glad to meet there.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I key into the joy and gladness in Your presence always.

*MAY 24, 2026: WEEK 4*

*PREVENTION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE*

*Hymn: (BH 216) I Am Resolved*

*Scripture: James 4:7-12*

*Teaching Method: Discussion*

*Primary Learning Outcome and Indicators:* Members will know the best ways to prevent domestic violence and indicate their knowledge by:

(i) Highlighting some preventive measures for domestic violence;

(ii) Giving a brief explanation of God's plan for marriage;

(iii) Making a personal commitment to prevent domestic violence in their family.

*ICE BREAKING PERIOD*
A church pastor invited one of his church members, who was a victim of domestic violence, into his office for counseling. He asked her how she was able to overcome the frequent arguments and beatings from her husband. The woman said, "I have learnt to be patient and more prayerful. To the glory of God, my husband is changing. I hope he will be better someday." If you were this church pastor, how would you advise this woman and other couples who quarrel and fight frequently and even use all kinds of weapons at the slightest provocation?

*Facilitator's Opening Remark*
Today, we shall be discussing the different ways believers can avert domestic violence among siblings, couples and other members of the family. In other words, we will be discussing some preventive measures disciples of Christ can put in place.

*EDUCATION / INTERACTION PERIOD*

*A. PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE*.. prevent domestic violence. In Luke 12:47–48, Jesus pointed out the fact that a servant who knew the will of his master and refused to do it will be beaten with many blows, while the one who does not know what his master wants and does the wrong things will be beaten with fewer blows. The Word of God is clear about the things to avoid that may lead to domestic violence. Scripture says that he who knows what to do and fails to do it has sinned. Looking through the lens of God's Word, today's lesson will talk about the things we need to know so as not to fall victim to domestic violence.
Domestic violence does not happen without a cause. Understanding the causes will help identify the ways to prevent them. We have looked at the causes earlier this month, so let us consider some of the ways it can be prevented:

*▪︎ Identify the Real Source (The Devil):* The Devil is the arch-enemy of believers. He manipulates people differently and causes conflicts between couples and siblings in the home. Disciples of Jesus should, therefore, understand this and refrain from retaliating when there are offences against them. Paying evil with evil will only satisfy the Devil's desire for violence. Apostle Paul said, "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification" (Romans 14:19).

*▪︎ Prayer:* There is no problem that is beyond the intervention of God. When crisis is looming in the home, we should quickly resolve to seek the face of God in prayers for solution. We should seek God's understanding and wisdom so that it will not lead to violence. We are to pray about everything and anything in the home.

*▪︎ Encourage Equal Treatment Among Siblings:* Christian parents should not encourage favouritism in the ways they treat their children and other members of the family. This...
should include those who have been hired to assist in the home (house-helps). Even though there may be rea*ons to do so, wisdom should be applied so that no one will be treated unfairly.

*▪︎ Avoid Negative Talk/Slandering:* One thing that can easily trigger violence is false accusations. An attempt to prove one's innocence can lead to violence. Therefore, Christians should learn to speak the truth always and not slander or spread false rumours about other people.

*▪︎ Humility:* A soft response, according to the scripture, turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). A humble person will not argue and fight because he/she wants to prove his/her innocence about a matter. Such a person will turn to God for help in the midst of crisis and conflict instead of engaging in physical combat.

*▪︎ Patience:* Patience, they say, is golden. Most of the troubles and crises in some homes would have been avoided if people were more patient. Believers should not be easily provoked, no matter the magnitude of the offence. We should be patient with one another in our relationships and trust God to bring about the change we desire in the lives of a difficult family member around us.

*▪︎ Self-Control:* Self-control is a great virtue that helps control one's emotions, impulses, or desires. It is the ability to put oneself under check, and it has been proven as one of the preventive measures against domestic violence.

*▪︎ Forgiveness:* Forgiveness is an antidote to domestic violence. A heart that has learnt to forgive will not seek retaliation for any offence against him/her in a violent way.

*▪︎ Responsible Lifestyle:* God expects His children to live responsibly with one another, especially as family members. We should love each other, pray, and seek the good of all instead of conflicts, rancour, jealousy and misunderstandings.

*Sharing Time:* What are some other measures we can take to prevent domestic violence?

*B. GOD'S PLAN FOR MARRIAGE/FAMILY*
The book of Genesis tells us that God is the Originator of marriage. After God had created everything, including man, He discovered that Adam had no companion. Then He said, "It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." He then caused the man to sleep, took one of his ribs, made the woman out of it and brought her to Adam (Genesis 2:18, 21-22). Adam joyfully recognised that Eve was like himself and that they were meant to live together. Invariably, the woman was made to be the man's companion, friend, and helper. Furthermore, Adam and Eve lived together happily as husband and wife until the devil deceived her into eating the forbidden fruit. However, the word "helper" does not mean that the woman is inferior or a slave to the man in any way. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the man to care for his wife as he cares for his own body. Apostle Paul explained it clearly in his letter to the church in Ephesus when he said, "Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it just as Christ does the church" (Ephesians 5:25-29). This command is the foundation of an ideal Christian home that is free from domestic violence. The following principles are God's plan for marriage:
Care: Family members are expected to care and pay attention to one another in every way possible. When this is done, there will be no room for domestic violence rather, issues will be settled amicably without resentment against one another.

*▪︎ Love:* Love is an essential element in the home that can reduce the level of bitterness among family members. Fostering love, care and encouragement in the family should be the responsibility of everyone.
Obedience: The book of Ephesians encourages children to obey and honour their parents in the Lord, and slaves should also obey their masters (Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1, 5-6).

*▪︎ Submission:* Couples must submit to one another because of their reverence for Christ. God expects that submission will be in place in any human relationship, husband/wife, children/parent, slave/master, to live peacefully and in accordance with God's plan for the family.

*▪︎ Unity:* Someone once said, "A united family is a progressive family." The Psalmist said, "How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity" (Psalm 133:1). God expects family members to live in peace and harmony, no matter our differences.
If these principles are followed, our homes will be heaven on earth and God will be glorified.

*Sharing Time*
Explain with biblical references the difference between submission to one's spouse and being a coward.

*Facilitator's Closing Remark*
God's original plan for the family does not include violence of any kind among family members, notwithstanding the level of provocation. God has always been concerned with the stability of the home and society since the time He brought Adam and Eve together in the bond of marriage. Therefore, Christian marriages should not be destroyed because of domestic violence, as we see in some homes today.
When two people are married, they are expected to commit themselves to each other, uphold and care for each other and be best friends. Although no home is perfectly free from challenges, when couples and other family members are faithfully committed to one another, true love will be manifested in the home, and peace will continually reign. Disciples of Christ should know that because of our differences, there could be issues among family members, but we should not allow it to degenerate to the point of being violent because of its consequences on the parents and the children. Individual members of the family can resolve not to get involved in things that will result in violence irrespective of the provocation. Where violence has become a regular occurrence, help can be sought from the church or specialists sea*oned Christian marriage counsellors who are known for their effective and practical solutions.

*Prayer:* Pray that God will make you an instrument of peace in your family, church and community.

*Post-Group Activity*
Make a deliberate move this week to reach out to a small group where today's lesson can be discussed for the benefit of those facing the challenge of domestic violence.
