THE GREATEST HOPE
BRIEF SERMON ANALYSIS
*PSALMS 2:1-12*
*1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-18*
Halleluyah!!!
We are enmeshed in a certain struggle for power and control. The devil having lost his rebellious bid woefully in heaven understands the love of God for man. Just as an evil person will try to get to someone he cannot bring down through someone he loves, the devil is trying to get to God through man. However, the devil will fail woefully, if only we learn to cooperate with God by following the path that will take us home safely. The example of which Jesus showed us by the path of the cross.
As the Psalmist as put it, the heathen rage, the people imagine a vain thing, the kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD. These are a set of powerful and numerous people the devil succeeded in deceiving into his camp. Do not be surprised because if he could deceive a third of the stars in heaven, then manipulating humans should be easier. All these people are in different places of authority and around us. Unfortunately, we may also be included, if we fail to surrender our hearts to God.
Looking at how the devil has dominated in every place, what is then our hope? Our greatest hope is in Jesus Christ. For whatever pleasure we enjoy or persecution we suffer, we must always remember that the earth is a temporary place of abode for us. We must remain steadfast in our belief in Christ and on the path of salvation to reign with Christ forever. He has prepared for us a kingdom that we cannot afford to miss.
Death is about the most feared element in our world buoyed by the uncertainty surrounding what life after death entails, but Jesus has shown us death can be conquered and the beautiful life that awaits those who believe in Him. This is the reason all His messages were centred on the kingdom of God. He never offered us the best in this world, because the best here is always temporal, but has offered us abundant life.
For this reason, I make bold to state that the resurrection of Jesus is the most important christian celebration because it is at the heart of the Christian message.
- Without the resurrection, Jesus’ ministry ends in defeat and disillusionment (Luke 24:21). But everything changes with “He is not here! He has risen from the dead, just as he said” (Matthew 28:6). The resurrection culminates the passion narrative in all four Gospels because it is at the center of redemption itself.
- Paul bluntly stated that apart from the resurrection our faith and message are in vain (1 Corinthians 15:12-19). Thinking about how absolutely bleak and pointless any so-called “Christian” life would be without the resurrection should spur us to ponder it all the more.
- The resurrection amounts to the Father’s clear signal that Jesus is the powerful Son of God who has conquered death and reigns as Lord of all (Romans 1:4; 4:25).
- The resurrection demonstrates that Jesus’ “blood of the new covenant” saves His people from their sins.
- Without the resurrection, none of Jesus’ promises like the promise of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7), the preparation of an abode in Heaven (John 14:1-3) and His return, would be trustworthy. .
- Without the resurrection, there would be no apostolic foundation for the church (Matthew 16:18). Jesus’ resurrection turned scattered deserters back into faithful followers.
- Without the resurrection, there would be no model of sacrificial living. Jesus embodied and demonstrated the oxymoron of the crucified life, that a self-centered life is misery, and that genuinely abundant living occurs only when one dies to self-interest (Matthew 10:38-39; 16:24-28; 20:26-28; 23:12).
- Without the resurrection, the untold millions of injustices perpetrated by human beings throughout history would never be made right. There would be no ultimate reckoning for sin, and Satan would win the cosmic battle.
In conclusion,
The meaning of the cross is at best unclear without the resurrection. Any presentation of the good news of Jesus the Messiah must stress His resurrection as the essential explanation of His death and the proof of its saving power to eternally unite us with the Father.
Jesus is not a dead martyr to be pitied, but a living and reigning Lord to be loved and emulated, both in present suffering and in future reward.
The Resurrection of Christ is our greatest hope!
May our lives be filled with the power of His resurrection, in Jesus name. Amen.
