HE CHURCH
AND
MANAGEMENT STUDIES
Management is the coordination of all resources through the processes of planning, organizing, leading and controlling in order to attain stated objective.
One of the earliest analytical statements of management concepts appears in the Bible, Exodus 18:13-26.
13. The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, "What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening.
15. Moses answered him, "Because the people come to me to seek God's will. 16. Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God's decrees and laws."
17. Moses' father-in-law replied, "What you are doing is not good. 18. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him.
20. Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 21. But select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain--and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
23. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."
24. Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 26. They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
This passage tells how Jethro, Moses father-in-law, observed Moses spending an entire day listening to the complaints and problems of his people.
Following this observation, Jethro told Moses that what he was doing was too much for one man (Controlling) and suggested specific steps that should be taken to reliever of his burden
1. The first recommendation of Jethro was that Ordinances and Laws should be taught to people.
The modern counterpart of this advice is an organizations policy statement.
(Ex. 18 Vs 19-20 ).
2. Jethros Second points, he recommended that leaders be selected and assigned to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds and rulers of fifties, and rulers of ten.
The process of appointing leaders, each of which is responsible for a given number of subordinates, is referred to as delegation of authority (Ex.18vs. 21).
3. Jethros third points that these rulers should administer all routine matters and should bring to Moses only, the important questions, forms the basis for a well-known control procedure (Ex.18vs.22).
4. Jethros fourth point: is that if Moses follows his advice, there will be less pressure or trouble for him, there will also be peace and harmony in the Camp.
JOSEPH 5 MS OF MANAGEMENT
Nothing is as vital as an idea whose time has come. When an owner gets an idea he should put it into instant action.
Ask a successful businessman what caused him to be successful.
You will be surprised how often a word or thought sparked him. He will tell you how to make better use of your five resources namely, Method, Materials, Men, Money and Market.
Managing is the means used by businessman to increase their profits and rate of growth when all these happen then they say an organization is successful. Success in business means pleasing all kinds of people so well that they remain your friends for life.
In Book of Genesis chapter 41 and 47 Joseph implemented the 5MS and this I called Joseph 5MS of management (870206).
