True education is not the filling of a vessel, but the kindling of a flame. Yesterday, at St George’s College, Obinomba, that flame became a wildfire. In a keen battle for supremacy, the students of SS 1 White and SS 1 Blue discarded the safety of calculators to engage in a raw, cognitive duel across the landscapes of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Economics.

In this "bravery chase," where seconds felt like hours, SS 1 Blue harmonized their talents to emerge as the definitive victors. We extend our highest commendations to the class representatives;

1. Mgbomene David

2. Uchendu Chioma

3. Anamali Gift

4. Asimole Fineseed

The commitment of St George's College, Obinomba, to student welfare was recently underscored by the participation of our instructors; Mr Frank Osamezu and Mr Sunday Okwudi in a critical national training program. Held in Asaba (November 25th to 26th, 2025), the two-day seminar focused on "Mainstreamed Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Content in the Revised National Curriculum"
Initiated by the ICMPD in collaboration with NAPTIP, the training was essential for equipping subject teachers with a standardized approach to understanding and implementing the new curriculum structure. It highlighted the critical rationale for integrating TIP awareness directly into school subjects, making it a proactive and consistent protective measure.
The core objective was to empower teachers to "savage situations" by identifying vulnerabilities and recognizing signs of exploitation both within and outside the school environment. This knowledge is crucial for safeguarding the "beloved students" of the college. The seminar was described as "enlightening," guaranteeing that the acquired skills will "spark action that echoes far beyond the walls," transforming curriculum knowledge into real-world protection.
Indeed, mentoring is always our mantra in St George's College." This commitment ensures that the college remains at the forefront of providing both academic excellence and world-class, responsive student protection.

Our recent co-curricular activities featured an insightful seminar titled "Learning from Mistakes," specifically tailored to focus on test assessment and examinations.
The event's anchor introduced the distinguished panel of guest speakers: Mr Happy Ozimokor, Mr John Osamezu, and Mrs Christabel Ekeze.

Mr Happy Ozimokor, led the session on Acknowledging and Accepting Mistakes. He urged the students to take responsibility for their actions, emphasizing that every mistake is an opportunity to learn and become a better version of oneself. He also emphatically referenced the scripture, Philippians 2:4-11, encouraging students to emulate humility- as exemplified by Jesus; to enhance their academic performance.

Mr John Osamezu anchored the discussion on "Understanding the Cause of Mistakes". He highlighted common causative factors: a relentless, adamant pace, failing to adhere to necessary corrections, and exhibiting a lackadaisical attitude toward learning. He admonished the students to embrace consistent studying habits to avoid academic pitfalls.

Mrs Christabel Ekeze, presented on "Developing a Correction Strategy". She emphatically stated that time management is crucial for tests and examinations. Key strategies she noted included:
1. Properly examining instructions to avoid self-assumptions.

2. Giving equal attention to all subjects to prevent academic deficiencies.

3. Accumulating knowledge over time and preparing early to stay updated and avoid a last-minute approach to studying.

The anchor, Mr Sunday Okwudi, concluded the session by expressing deep appreciation to the guest speakers for their words of wisdom. He reiterated the need for students to take responsibility for their actions and make necessary adjustments as they prepare for their first-term examination next week.

St George's College is proud of our guest speakers and their invaluable contribution. Kudos!
Indeed, mentoring is always our mantra in St George's College!

During the co-curricular activities, St George's College proudly hosted our counseling practicum students—Counsellor K. Stephen Otite, Counsellor O. Benedicta Ogbemudia, Counsellor O. Jane Ossai, and Counsellor Grace E. Eiterebhe—for their mandatory practicum seminar.

Counsellor O. Benedicta Ogbemudia introduced the faculty supervisors: Prof. Eric Oghuonu and Prof. Mrs. Grace Akpochafor. The central theme of the seminar was "Career Choice."

Prof. Eric Oghuonu served as the first speaker, strongly advising students to identify their future aspirations as early as possible during their secondary school years. He defined "career" as the life venture one pursues to ensure future livelihood. He stressed the importance of self-assessment, urging students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to consult school counselors for guidance on subject selection across the Sciences, Business, and Humanities. He noted that in cases of confusion regarding career paths, counselors are equipped to employ psychological tools to appropriately guide and place students based on their inherent capabilities.

Furthermore, he outlined key steps for effective career planning:
1. Investigate the cost and duration of potential courses for timely preparation.

2. Explore job opportunities related to the intended career field.

He also urged teachers to prepare students' mindsets and recommended organizing excursions to provide proper exposure to various career paths.

The second speaker, Prof. Mrs. Grace Akpochafor, highlighted critical factors that influence career choice, including the potentially detrimental effects of peer pressure and parental influence if not properly guided. She underscored basic personal considerations for students:
1. Identifying their true interests.

2. Assessing their ability and capabilities.

In conclusion, students were strongly encouraged to utilize the available school counselors for guidance on both career choices and personal issues. The seminar was a significant eye-opener for our students. Special thanks to our dedicated counselors for initiating this valuable program. St George's College is exceptionally proud of your commitment!
