"...AND I SCREAMED ON TOP OF MY VOICE"

In our family devotion this morning, we read from Genesis 39:7-20 where the author of the devotional guide drew lessons from Joseph who honoured God.

My attention was however drawn to something else, I have never thought of throughout my studying that passage several times.

I just want to share it especially with my sisters and parents of female children, looking at the rising cases of r**e, in**st and girl child abuse in the society.

Genesis 39:13-18 reads:
[13] And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled away,
[14] She called to the men of her household and said to them, Behold, he [your master] has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock and insult us; he came in where I was to lie with me, and I screamed at the top of my voice.
[15] And when he heard me screaming and crying, he left his garment with me and fled and got out of the house.
[16] And she laid up his garment by her until his master came home.
[17] Then she told him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you brought among us came to me to mock and insult me.
[18] And when I screamed and cried, he left his garment with me and fled out [of the house].

The fact is that the narrative here was just a deceptive way of covering up the real incident between Mrs. Potiphar an Joseph but there is a lesson to derive.

One thing I would like my sisters to learn is the importance of their voice. The manner in which Mrs. Potiphar emphasized the use of her voice for her safety amazes me.

The only way she could get people to believe her story is to tell people that she shouted on top of her voice and it scared Joseph away.

It look as though, there was a general understanding that a ra**st is likely to flee when a woman shouts.

When she sold that dummy to the men of her household, they believed her even though no voice was heard from the house.

Her husband, Mr. Potiphar also believed the propaganda without doubt.

I have heard of stories from several young girls who escaped r**e and over 70% confessed using the voice, just about 15% used their strength to resist and the 15% attributed to someone emerging at the scene or something else.

Many who fell victims will end up their story by saying, they were overpowered after series of struggles.

No amount of pleading and moral education could stop Amnon from ra**ng her sister Tamar. Tamar took time to educate Amnom on how he can her in an honourable way, even with the consent of King David but he refused and defiled her (2 Samuel 13).

A man who wants to r**e a woman is like a hunter aiming at a game, the more gentle your are by trying not to draw attention, the better for him. When he finally grabs the lady, he will be stronger than a lion devouring its prey.

Instead of Laughing Out Loud (LOL) that dominates conversations between young men and women, I advocate a Shouting Out Loud(SOL).

Shouting out may start even at the point where the men are getting closer, giving gifts and making complimentary comments with out any justifiable reason.

Questions must be asked on why they are suddenly becoming nice, ladies are very sensitive to these things but many keep quiet until they get chocked where they lost their voice to shout.

Parents especially mothers must begin to teach their girls that the high pitched voice they have is not only for singing soprano in choir but should be used when a man makes strange advances. They must also teach them to be careful when men become so nice to them and avoid being with them in an isolated place.

Growing up in the village taught me a lesson, we usually cast food for chicken they want to cook so they can come close and relax and a catch becomes more easier.

May God help our sisters to be wiser and the parents to wake up to their responsibilities of training the child in Jesus name, Amen.

Ben Dzwa is a Christian Youth Leader from Makurdi, Nigeria.
