PRESIDENT TINUBU ORDERS IMMEDIATE REDUCTION OF 2026 HAJJ FARES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to review and reduce the 2026 Hajj fares within the next two days.

The directive was conveyed by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting with NAHCONโ€™s management and board members at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

The Vice President emphasized the need for close collaboration between national and state Hajj officials, including state governors, to agree on new, more affordable fares. He urged all stakeholders to ensure prompt payments and timely remittances to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to guarantee a smooth and successful pilgrimage.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, explained that the move is part of efforts to make the sacred journey more accessible to Nigerian Muslims.

โ€œThe aim is to ease the financial burden on intending pilgrims,โ€ Senator Hadeija stated. โ€œWith the naira appreciating as a result of the governmentโ€™s economic reforms, it is only fair that the reduced exchange rates reflect in the new Hajj fares. We expect a significant reduction compared to last yearโ€™s โ‚ฆ8.5 million to โ‚ฆ8.6 million rate.โ€

The Secretary of NAHCON, Dr. Mustapha Mohammad, welcomed the directive, describing it as a relief for Muslim faithful aspiring to participate in the holy pilgrimage.

โ€œThe lower the fare, the more inclusive and affordable the Hajj becomes,โ€ Dr. Mohammad said. โ€œAs instructed by the Vice President, we will work tirelessly to ensure that the revised rates are within reach for the average Nigerian Muslim.โ€

Also reacting, the Chairman of the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board and Deputy Chairman of the Forum of Chief Executives of the 36 State and FCT Pilgrimsโ€™ Boards, Alhaji Faruk Aliyu Yaro, praised the Presidentโ€™s intervention.

โ€œWe are happy with the Presidentโ€™s concern for the Muslim community,โ€ Yaro said. โ€œThis move will encourage more faithful to fulfill this important pillar of Islam.โ€

The Wife of the Governor of Niger State, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has described the recent Niger Day held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York as the beginning of a long-term journey to reposition Niger State for sustainable global partnerships.

In a statement from her Chief Press Secretary, Hadiza Abdullahi Maikano, the First Lady emphasized that while the fanfare of the event may have passed, its true impact lies in the follow-up work now underway in agriculture, youth empowerment, education, and healthcare.

She explained that the signing of key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with partners in smart agriculture, virtual healthcare, and youth transition programs was not an end in itself, but the laying of a foundation that will unfold gradually in the lives of Nigerlites.

โ€œNiger Day at UNGA 80 has placed Niger State on the global radar. But more importantly, it has set in motion processes that will take time, patience, and consistency. The real work is what we do with the commitments made, and how we translate them into better livelihoods for our people,โ€ Hajiya Fatima Bago said.

She further commended His Excellency Farmer Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for his bold vision, noting that global recognition is only meaningful when it trickles down to the grassroots. She pledged her officeโ€™s continued focus on supporting areas where women, children, and families can feel the tangible benefits of these international collaborations.
