God answers prayers
Exhortation on Psalm 65:2
Psalm 65:2 (ESV): "O you who hear prayer, to you shall all flesh come."
Beloved, let us reflect on the profound simplicity and depth encapsulated in Psalm 65:2. This verse declares a timeless truth about our God—He is the One who hears prayer. In an age where we often feel unheard and overlooked, this assurance is a wellspring of hope and comfort.
1. The Listener of Prayers:
"O you who hear prayer," speaks to the intimate, attentive nature of our God. Unlike idols made of stone or wood, which are lifeless and mute, our God is alive and active. He listens to the whispers of our hearts, the cries of our souls, and the prayers we may not even have words to express. The Prophet Isaiah reminds us of this truth, saying, "Before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I will hear" (Isaiah 65:24).
2. The Invitation to All Flesh:
The psalmist continues, "to you shall all flesh come." This is an open invitation to everyone, regardless of background, nationality, or past transgressions. It echoes Jesus' words in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Our God is not exclusive; He desires that all people turn to Him in prayer, acknowledging Him as the source of all comfort and strength.
3. The Assurance of Response:
The assurance that God hears our prayers is fundamental to our faith. 1 John 5:14 tells us, "And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us." This promise is not conditional upon our perfection but upon His faithfulness. Our prayers matter to God, and He responds in His perfect wisdom and timing.
4. The Transformative Power of Prayer:
When we come to God in prayer, we are not just speaking into the void but entering into a divine dialogue that has the power to transform our lives. James 5:16 reminds us, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." Prayer changes us, aligns our hearts with God’s purposes, and releases His power into our circumstances.
5. The Universal Call:
Finally, let us recognize the universal call to prayer. In Revelation 5:8, the prayers of the saints are depicted as golden bowls full of incense before God’s throne. This imagery underscores the preciousness of our prayers and their role in God’s divine plan. We are all called to be intercessors, lifting up our voices for ourselves, our communities, and our world.
In conclusion, Psalm 65:2 is a call to recognize and embrace the incredible privilege of prayer. It assures us that our Creator is a personal, responsive God who invites all people to come to Him. As we come to Him in prayer, let us do so with confidence and gratitude, knowing that He hears us and that our prayers make a difference.
So, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, bringing our joys, sorrows, needs, and thanksgiving, for He who hears prayer is waiting to commune with us. To Him, all flesh shall indeed come, and in Him, we find our peace and purpose.
Amen.
