TEXT: LUKE 1:5–25
TOPIC: ANNOUNCING THE COMING OF A GREAT SERVANT
When God decides to send His blessings upon humanity, He often does this in the most spectacular ways. The coming of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ are such blessings.
Zechariah thought he was “an old man.” For his wife Elizabeth, he felt too that “my wife is advanced in years” (vs 7, 19) and so the question of giving birth to a child was way out of their reach! This is despite the fact that an angel of the Lord was talking to him, which indicates that God was speaking through His messenger.
Zechariah was rebuked (verses 19–22) because his response was interpreted as an act of unbelief.
The son to be born was to be named John and clearly described the kind of blessing he would be to everyone and his role as the one who would prepare people’s hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ.
He was to be fearless, bold and courageous like Elijah in his ministry to Israel.
God will always bring His will to pass, whether we believe Him or not.
