In 1945, the Second World War ended.
But one Japanese soldier didn’t believe it.
His name was Hiroo Onoda.
And he stayed hidden in the jungles of the Philippines for 29 YEARS refusing to surrender.
Yes, you read that right.
Twenty. Nine. Years.
Every time people tried to tell him,
“Brother, the war is over. Japan lost. Go home.”
He thought it was enemy propaganda.
He lived on bananas, coconuts, and occasionally stole food from nearby farms.
He would still carry out “raids” in the jungle, fully convinced he was fighting for his country.
…until 1974, when his former commanding officer (now an old man) had to fly from Japan to the jungle, meet him face-to-face, and personally relieve him of duty.
But here’s the kicker 👇🏽
This man wasted almost three decades of his life fighting a war that had ended.
Not because he wasn’t brave.
Not because he wasn’t strong.
But because of belief.
His mind trapped him in a reality that no longer existed.
And it hit me:
How many of us are doing the same thing today?
👉🏽 Fighting battles that are long over.
👉🏽 Holding on to pain that should have been released.
👉🏽 Living by “rules” that don’t exist anymore.
• Some people are still fighting with their past failures.
• Some are still stuck in the mindset of their parents’ poverty.
• Some are still living in the shadow of “what people said about me years ago.”
The war ended.
But in your mind? You’re still in the jungle.
What am I saying?
We don’t just live in the world outside us.
We live in the world inside us.
And if you don’t scan your beliefs…
If you don’t update your inner reality…
You’ll be fighting ghosts while the real opportunities pass you by.
That’s why I read books.
That’s why I invest in new experiences.
Because every new story I consume breaks another mental wall I didn’t even know I was living inside.
My reality today is not where I was born.
It’s what I chose to believe.
So let me ask you:
What war are you still fighting that ended a long time ago?
