🌿 Discernment and Suspicion: Knowing the Difference 🌿
Too often, we confuse discernment with suspicion. Yet, the two are very different, and mixing them up can damage our walk with God and our relationships with others.
👉 Discernment is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit. It is the ability to distinguish between truth and error, good and evil, light and darkness. Scripture reminds us:
"But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." (Hebrews 5:14)
Discernment is rooted in love and guided by the Spirit. It protects us, directs us, and helps us align with God’s will.
👉 Suspicion, on the other hand, is birthed from doubt, fear, and mistrust. It makes us assume the worst in people without evidence. Suspicion erodes trust, sows division, and weakens relationships. Paul warns us against this kind of mindset:
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Corinthians 13:7)
📌 Being suspicious of others is not the same as being discerning. Suspicion tears down, while discernment builds up. Suspicion looks through the eyes of the flesh, but discernment looks through the eyes of the Spirit.
Instead of harboring suspicion, let us pray for God to sharpen our discernment. James 1:5 encourages us:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
✨ May we walk in discernment, not suspicion. May our hearts be filled with love and wisdom, and may our relationships reflect the grace and truth of Christ.
