To be independent means to be free from external control, support, or influence and to have the ability to determine one’s own path.

Yet, for many displaced communities today, this independence remains out of reach. The destruction of livelihoods, disruption of children’s education, and forced displacement from ancestral lands into various Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps have left many families dependent on external support for their survival.

As Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day, reflecting on the remarkable achievements recorded throughout the years, we also remember communities whose freedom, dignity, and ability to rebuild their lives have been disrupted by conflict.

We pray for the restoration of peace, security, livelihoods, and opportunities for conflict affected communities, so that they too can reclaim their dignity, rebuild their lives, and experience the true meaning of independence.

The Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace (FJDP) recently participated in a two day Civic Action Teams (CivActs) State Based Participatory Governance and Rights Based Engagement Workshop organised by Accountability Lab Nigeria. During the workshop, FJDP contributed to discussions and knowledge sharing on good governance, rights based engagement, conflict management, and practical approaches to promoting accountability within communities.

The workshop was designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical skills in participatory governance, rights based engagement, conflict sensitive problem solving, ethical communication, community feedback, inclusion, and electoral participation.

The sessions provided participants with an opportunity to exchange experiences and explore practical approaches to engaging communities and addressing governance and rights related concerns. Participants also gained knowledge of the appropriate processes and referral pathways for seeking accountability, as well as the use of relevant tools and evidence based content to support effective advocacy and community engagement.

Through the workshop, FJDP strengthened its capacity in conflict management and resolution, good governance, ethical communication, community feedback mechanisms, and the processes involved in demanding accountability through appropriate referral pathways. The knowledge and skills gained will further support FJDP’s efforts to promote inclusive participation, community engagement, justice, accountability, and responsive governance.

Today, September 18, 2026, in Lafia, at Nasarawa Luxury Hotel, stakeholders from Benue and Nasarawa States converged for a Forum on Mediation Coordination across Benue and Nasarawa States, organized by FJDP Nigeria, with the support of Misereor Germany and the Embassy of Austria.

Where there is a lack of food, it can result in a deepening crisis, leading to widespread hunger and poverty, health emergencies, and social unrest. When people can no longer access regular and nutritious meals, food insecurity can quickly escalate into a severe humanitarian crisis.

Farming feeds the global population. However, communities around the world are facing prolonged conflicts and crises that have displaced people from their homes, forced them to abandon their farmlands, and disrupted food production and agricultural development.

In Benue State, many communities rely heavily on agriculture as their primary means of livelihood. However, a large population from these agrarian communities has been displaced into IDP camps, where they now face excruciating hunger and acute poverty as their livelihoods have been abruptly cut off.

Many children in these camps are at increased risk of malnutrition, while women and men struggle with hunger and uncertainty, often with limited means to rebuild their livelihoods.

At the Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace (FJDP), agriculture is one of our thematic areas of focus. We recognize the vital role farming plays in strengthening livelihoods, promoting food security, reducing poverty, and building resilient communities.

On this World Agriculture Day, we call on the public to honour farmers, support sustainable agriculture, and raise awareness about the importance of food security.

To all farmers across the globe, we celebrate and appreciate your invaluable contribution to feeding the world.

With sustainable agriculture, we can help reduce hunger, poverty, and the health risks faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable communities.

Remigius Ihyula as the Coordinator of the Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace (FJDP), while Revd. Fr. Philip Doolumun Apuu will now serve as Acting Coordinator.

Today, charity and philanthropy are evolving to address the deeper causes of poverty and inequality.

Many children, women, and men in IDP communities face severe risks to their health, mental well-being, safety, survival, and protection from gender-based violence (GBV), as well as acute hunger, stemming from poverty, conflict, and displacement.

Beyond providing immediate assistance, charity strengthens healthcare and education, promotes cultural preservation, and supports the protection of vulnerable groups.

From traditional giving to strategic philanthropy, charity today is a driving force for social innovation, poverty reduction, and inclusive development.

The International Day of Charity was established to raise awareness and mobilize individuals, NGOs, and stakeholders around the world to support others through volunteering and philanthropic efforts.

September 5 was chosen to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for her contribution to overcoming poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.”

On this International Day of Charity, let us remember that every act of kindness matters. By giving, volunteering, and standing in solidarity with vulnerable communities, we can help restore dignity, strengthen resilience, and create hope for a better future.
