The story of Jacob wrestling with God is not about persistence in prayer.
If you think this is a lesson on "holding on until God gives you what you want," you are missing the point.
We treat this story like a cage match where we have to pin God down to get a blessing.
That is exhausting advice.
When you have spent your whole life fighting; fighting for control, fighting for approval, fighting to survive, you don't need a God you have to beat. You need a God who can defeat you.
Jacob was a runner. He spent his life tricking people and escaping the mess. He ran from Esau. He ran from Laban.
But that night at the river, God didn't come to test Jacob's strength. He came to destory Jacob's independence.
God didn't just "touch" Jacob's hip. He dislocated it. He crippled him.
For a man who solved every problem by running away, a broken hip was the end of his career. God took away his ability to run.
Jacob didn't hold on because he was strong. He held on because he couldn't stand up anymore. He was clinging to the very One who broke him because he had no other option.
You are not the champion wrestler. You are the runner who needs to be caught.
Religion says “Fight (pray) hard enough and God will bless you. Push Until Somethin Happen.”
The Gospel says “God loves you too much to let you keep running. He will break your self-reliance to save your soul.”
The limp was not a punishment to Jacob. It was a trophy. It meant he would never walk alone again.
Are you trying to win the fight, or are you ready to allow God break something in you?
