*THE LAST WILL BE FIRST*

*BH 119: Will Jesus Find Us Watching*

*Text: Matthew 20:1, 6-16*
20:1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

20:6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ’Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

20:7 "’Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. "He said to them, ’You also go and work in my vineyard.’

20:8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ’Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

20:9 "The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.

20:10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.

20:11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.

20:12 ’These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ’and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

20:13 "But he answered one of them, ’I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?

20:14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.

20:15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

20:16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

*Memory verse:* "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." Matthew 20:16, NIV

___________

Behavioural psychologists said that employees who contribute more to the achievement of the organisation's goals need to be given more incentives than others in order to encourage high performance in the workplace. It is natural to feel we deserve more because we have done more.

On the contrary, the kingdom of God operates on a different principle. The land-owner in Jesus' parable employed the workers at different times of the day and then pays them equally at the end of the day's job. The men who were hired first took the landowner up because they saw no reason why he would pay them the same amount as those who came to work later.

The landowner then reminded them that he was not unfair to them and that he had paid them based on their agreement. He rebuked them for being jealous of others who benefitted from His generosity.

While Jesus was not underplaying putting in efforts to achieve success, He challenged the human philosophy of "those who finish first are winners", "those who start early accomplish more", "and those who stand in the front are first recognised".

We all did not become members of God's kingdom at the same time. Jesus called us in at different times. We work in the kingdom because we love God, not for the love of rewards.

God will reward us by grace and not necessarily because we deserve it. Instead of comparing yourself or being bitter for what other Christians enjoy, serve the Lord with joy wherever He has placed you.

*Perceive:* God determines what He gives every of His children.

*Ponder:* Are you depending on your skills, qualification or people for your progress?

*RBT Passage:* Judges 6-8

*TOPIC*: GOD INSTITUTES THE PASSOVER

*GOLDEN TEXT*: This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord— a lasting ordinance. *Exodus 12:14, NIV*

Scientists studied a native tribe in South America whose people were dying prematurely for generations. After thorough investigation, a disease was identified to be transmitted by an insect that lived in the walls of their homes. Surprisingly, these people did nothing about their problem and continue to die young. Many Christians today also behave in such a manner. In today's passage, God demonstrated His displeasure towards the Egyptians by killing their first born. He did this in order to liberate the Israelites. By this act, He instituted the Passover. He instructed each family of the Israelites to choose a year-old lamb, without blemish or defect, kill it, and sprinkle its blood on the door posts so that when the angel of destruction is passing, it will pass over them and the first born sons of the Israelites will be spared. The animal must also be roasted and eaten for the Passover. The people obeyed and did accordingly. The Passover is God's provision of the way of escape for humankind from sinand death. It is not sufficient to know that Christ was sacrificed for our sins, we must appropriate that sacrifice in our lives and receive His gift of salvation.
How then can we appropriate the Passover in our lives? We must trust Christ's salvation and feed on His word to receive strength daily through worship, meditation on God's Word and prayer. It is only by these that we can stay away from defiling lifestyles and relationships to maintain holiness and consecration to the Lord.

*Perceive*: - The Passover is not only an ordinance but a memorial to be kept alive.

*Ponder*: - Have you appropriated the blood of Jesus Christ in your life?

*Practice:* - From today, be determined to start living in the consciousness of Christ's sacrifice for you.

*Prayer*: - Holy Spirit, make my faith surge by Your power.

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD

MONDAY MARCH 14, 2022

RBT: JUDGES 4-5

TOPIC: KEEP HOLY ASSEMBLY

TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:4-8

HYMN: BH 367: TAKE TIME TO BE HOLY

For seven days, present a food offering to the Lord. And on the seventh day, hold a sacred assembly and do not do any of your ordinary work. Leviticus 23:8, NIV

An assembly is a gathering of people who come together for a common purpose. At such gatherings, participants are expected to comport themselves in a dignified and responsible manner until the programme is over.
Similarly, in observing the feast of unleavened bread, the Israelites were given instructions on how they were to conduct themselves when they are about to observe the meal. They were to gather together on the first and the seventh day without doing any work and for seven days, they were to present an offering to the Lord by fire each day. Their gathering was to be in a holy manner to maintain their peculiarity among other nations. This was to commemorate their deliverance when the angel of death visited Egypt. The first born Jews were spared as a result of the lambs that were killed with the blood sprinkled on their doorposts. They also fed on the lamb, and this gave them strength for the journey.
The Lord’s Supper is linked with the Passover meal in Christian tradition today because Christ has been sacrificed for us as the Lamb of God. It is usually a solemn service which calls for personal reflection and readiness to live a holy life for the glory of God. The meal is meant to be taken as a symbol of our deliverance from sin and celebration of liberty brought by the blood of the Lamb. As a believer, you must always remember Christ’s sacrifice for you. Determine to eliminate, all leaven – manifestation of the flesh in your life – and uphold holiness and godliness in words and deeds.

PERCEIVE: The principle from Passover is an observance that would clearly mark a believer from the unbelieving world.

PONDER: Do you understand the story behind the Passover?

PRACTICE: Appropriate God’s purchase of freedom for your life.

PRAYER: Father, help me to keep myself holy for You every day of my life in Jesus’ name.

Holy Spirit, be the single, most important guiding Person in my life.

*TOPIC: THE TEMPLE'S FOUNDATION LAID*

*Text: Haggai 2:1-9, 15-19*

*Hymn: BH 264: There Shall Be Showers of Blessings*

*RBT Passage: Joshua 23-24*

From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the Lord's temple was laid. Give careful thought...from this day on, I will bless you. Haggai 2:18-19, NIV.

*Haggai 2:1-9,15-19*
2:1 on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:

2:2 "Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,

2:3 ’Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?

2:4 But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. ’Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ’and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.

2:5 ’This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’

2:6 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: ’In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

2:7 I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty.

2:8 ’The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.

2:9 ’The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ’And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty."

*15-19*
2:15 "’Now give careful thought to this from this day on —consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD’s temple.

2:16 When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.

2:17 I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,’ declares the LORD.

2:18 ’From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. Give careful thought:

2:19 Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. "’From this day on I will bless you.’"

________________

If we want to look backward then let's use it as a catalyst to look forward. Let's be convinced that what God did in our hey day He is still doing today.

In our text today, it is likely enough had been accomplished to notice a general idea of what the temple would look like once it was completed and some were discouraged at the prospects of their work.

Their focus had been diverted from the Lord unto the daunting task that lay ahead. Offering a word from the Lord,Haggai challenged them to focus on God instead of the getting caught up in discouragement and losing faith.

Haggai relay that the Lord promised to be with them. What else could they possibly ask for or need? If God was in their midst, He would equip them to fulfil the task ahead.

Along with the call for resilience, a call to remain steadfast in thework,God extended the callto rely on Him to meet theirneeds(vv. 5-9).

There is no doubt, we too face a daunting task. lnfact, we are responsible to accomplish more than we can possibly do alone. If we focus solely on the task ahead, dwelling on the number of resources required, we will grow discouraged as well.

We can never accomplish the work of the Lord in our abilities, but through Him we can. And since God promised to be with us and bless us,we have all we need to be productive. We can rely upon the Lord's provision, power and promise.

*Perceive:* Unfaithfulness to God through giving positions you at a disadvantage from receiving blessing from God.

*Ponder:* What is disturbing your good harvest from the Lord?

*Practice:* Do not give into discouragement and stop doing God's work.

*Prayer:* Lord. forgive me of my past unfaithfulness in giving and help me to be faithful as from today.

*Prayer:* Spirit of the living God. speak to our heart and soul through Your word to meet our needs.

*TOPIC: BOWING IN THANKSGIVING*

*Text: Psalm 138*

*Hymn: BH 44: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee*

*RBT Passage: Joshua 18-20*

*Memory verse*
I will bow down towards your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulnessjor you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame. Psalm 138:2, NlV.

*Psalms 138:1-8*
138:1 I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; before the "gods" I will sing your praise.

138:2 I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your unfailing love and your faithfulness, for you have so exalted your solemn decree that it surpasses your fame.

138:3 When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.

138:4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, LORD, when they hear what you have decreed.

138:5 May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great.

138:6 Though the LORD is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.

138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.

138:8 The LORD will vindicate me; your love, LORD, endures forever — do not abandon the works of your hands.

Every culture has its unique way of appreciating and acknowledging superiors. For some, mere handshake and words of compliment are enough.

Among Africans, prostrating, kneeling and bowing to the ground are parts of greeting, honouring, showing gratitude and acknowledging someone older or in a higher position.

David, in today's passage demonstrated a unique way of showing gratitude not to an earthly being but to the Supreme Being David expressed honour, reverence and thankfulness to God for all that He had done in his life.

He recounted God's love towards him and His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. David's experience was that of a feeble man conquering mighty kings.

This made him to attribute the victories to God who answered his prayers when he called for help.

In response to God's act of victory and answers to prayer, David decided to bow in praise to God as 0 show of reverence to Him.

How sincere is your worship to God? What is your attitude towards worship? As Christians, we need to daily ask ourselves whether our manner of worship show humility, reverence dnd brokenness in acknowledging who God is and what He is doing in our life.

Our worship to God must come from a genuine and sincere heart. It must show our hearts of appreciation to Him for His loving kindness and faithfulness.

If we must enjoy more of God's faithfulness in our lives, we must come humbly to Him at all times (v. 6).

*Perceive:* God deserves our worship because of who He is and what He is doing.

*Ponder:* Am I thankful to God for answered prayers or resentful for unanswered ones?

*Practice:* Take few minutes to worship God sincerely and humbly today.

*Prayer:* Lord, according to Your timetable. our success will not fail to come.

*Prayer:* Dear Father, I bow in reverence of Your name . Continue to reign supreme in my life

*TOPIC:WORSHIP IN THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY*

*Text: Revelation 5*

*Hymn: BH 20:0 Worship the King*

*RBT Passage: Joshua l4-l7*

*Memory verse*
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: “To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever! ”Revelation 5:13, NIV.

*Revelation 5:1-14*
5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals.

5:2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?"

5:3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.

5:4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."

5:6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

5:7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.

5:8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.

5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth."

5:11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.

5:12 In a loud voice they were saying: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

5:13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"

5:14 The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.
____________

A story was told of an amazing event which took place at Ipata market in llorin, Kwara State. While the Emir and his entourage were passing by, his attendants blew trumpets; and when passers-by heard the sound of the trumpets they bowed their heads and shouted, Sheu! Sheu!!Sheu!!!

A young boy who had never witnessed such an event wondered why the accolade. He was told that it was customary for everyone to honour the emir whenever he passes.

If an earthly king is praised and worshipped as such, Jesus deserves much more from God's children. Apostle John in the Island of Patmos saw an apocalyptic vision of the scroll that was sealed.

After the question about who is qualified to open the seals, Jesus is the only worthy person who can open the seals because of the sacrifice He offered with His blood.

This great sacrifice of Jesus for humankind made the four living creatures, the twenty-four elders, angels and every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on these a sang His praises because He is worthy to open the scroll.

The only one who is worthy to be worshipped in heaven and on earth is Jesus, the crucified, buried, resurrected and ascended One.

There are always the temptations to worship oneself, other people and other earthly things as against Christ alone who is praise worthy.

It is to Him alone our allegiance must bebecause Christ is our redeemer and Lord.

As from today, join other creatures in heaven and on earth in singing praises, honour and worship to Cool.

*Perceive:* Only Christ is worthy of worship and praise in heaven and on earth.

*Ponder:* Are you worshipping God for who He is?

*Practice:* Sing three hymns and worship songs now to God to appreciate Him for what He has done, is doing and will still do.

*Prayer:* Dear Lord, I worship and adore You for who You are. Be forever exalted in Jesus'name.

*TOPIC: JEWS DISCOURAGED FROM REBUILDING*

*Text: Ezra 4:1-5*

*Hymn: BH 56: Guide Me, 0 Thou Great Jehovah*

*RBT Passage: Joshua ll-l3*

*Memory verse*
Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. Ezra4:4, NlV.

*Ezra 4:1-5*
4:1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,

4:2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here."

4:3 But Zerubbabel, Joshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us."

4:4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building.

4:5 They bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.
____________

Nothing kills the spirit of a man more than discouragement. Many people who set out to achieve great things for the Lord and for themselves at one time or the other and were making progress suddenly could not continue because they were discouraged.

In today's passage, a group of people who were not covenanted members of Israel but who claim to be one with them approached Zerubbabel and offered to join the Jews in the rebuilding of the temple.

They claimed to worship the same God with the Jews just to make the Jews feel they are one. They were like the Samaritans an ethnic and religious community that consists of mixed races distinct from the Jews who emerged at some point after the Assyrian conquest of the Israelite kingdom.

They had always disagreed with the Jews on the location of the place of worship (temple). The intention these people to join in rebuilding the temple was a deceptive.

It was rather to frustrate their effort from building the temple Such people exist even today in very many places. They offer help, collaborate and participate in godly activities with the intention of hindering the progress; to lure people away from faith in God and pull them down from grace.

Believers should remember they are separated unto God and not get involved with anything that will compromise their testimony. You need a discerning spirit to distinguish between or genuine source of help and fake ones.

Be careful of undeserved privileges, cheap bailout and unsolicited gifts. They may be an inducement to pull you down from life and faith's growth. Beware!

*Perceive:* Fixing your eyes on your goal makes you aware of stumbling blocks and efforts to discourage you.

*Ponder.* How am I handling discouragement?

*Practice:* Determine not to accept discouragement today. Strengthen yourself and others in the Lord.

*Prayer:* Dear Lord, give me discerning spirit to choose rightly and strengthen my we heart against discouragement.
