The Price of Following Jesus

We know from Scripture that salvation is a free gift that Jesus gives us when we believe in Him. But just because our salvation is free—that doesn’t mean the rest of our lives with Jesus will cost us nothing as well.

Jesus says that following Him will cost us everything. This doesn’t mean that we have to earn our salvation or work for acceptance, but it does mean that following Jesus requires everything we have.

When we become disciples of Jesus, we follow in His footsteps. We let Jesus teach and guide us. If we are serious about this, then our lives will become patterned after His life. This means that just as Jesus took up a cross and gave up everything He had, by following Jesus we must also do the same.

So what does it mean to take up a cross and follow Jesus? It means that we should be ready to give up everything for the sake of Jesus. It means denying ourselves by surrendering our own desires and plans for God’s desires and plans. Rather than focusing on ourselves, we center our lives around God’s mission in the world: loving Him and loving others as we make disciples.

Taking up one’s cross isn’t easy, but there is nothing in this life that is better than following Jesus. While immediate pleasure often feels more desirable in the moment, it quickly fades and leaves us searching for more. No possession or position can lead to true satisfaction in life—that is found only in Jesus.

Take a moment to think about your life. Are there things that you’re holding onto that you would be hesitant to surrender to Jesus? Are there relationships that serve your own desires rather than God’s? Commit to following Jesus regardless of how difficult or challenging life might become. The cross, while painful, is temporary—abundant life with Jesus is eternal.

I rejoice to see Thee,

Will thou pass over me today?

Without my being blest?

MEMORY VERSE: “There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers.”

— Daniel 5:11

Bible Passage: Matthew 5:13–16

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

INTRODUCTION

In our last lesson, we learned about correct perceptions in politics, the dangers of not getting involved and the urgent need for active participation. In this lesson, we will explore approaches to engage in political and community involvement.

LESSON OUTLINES

1. Biblical Basis

2. Practical Steps for Engagement

BIBLICAL BASIS

As Christians, we must no longer allow the secular society to dictate our roles or use us to fulfil their agenda (Galatians 4:1, 7). Instead, we should actively project our relevance in the world, as we ensure biblical values and principles guide our actions (2 Peter 1:5–10). Believers are called to be “salt and light” in all areas of life, including politics (Matthew 5:13–16). All authority comes from God and one of our responsibilities as citizens is to obey authority (Romans 13:1). We have the mandate to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

PRACTICAL STEPS FOR ENGAGEMENT

1. Pray for Guidance – Before diving into political engagement, seek the Lord in prayer for His will and wisdom (Proverbs 3:5–6; James 1:5).

2. Educate Yourself – It is crucial to understand the political landscape. Familiarise yourself with local, national, and global issues (Proverbs 18:15).

3. Stay True to Biblical Values – As you engage in the political arena, you need to be steadfast with biblical principles to drive your values and judgement even in the face of opposition or challenges (Daniel 6:4–11; Philippians 4:8).

4. Register to Vote or/and be Voted for – One of the most fundamental ways to get involved is to exercise your right to vote. Participating in elections is a way of obeying the authority of the land and influencing decision-making. Ensure you are registered and informed about the candidates and issues on the ballot.

5. Join a Political Party – Consider aligning yourself with a political party that reflects your Christian values. Engage in discussions, attend meetings, and participate in party activities. This affiliation will amplify your voice and provide a platform for advocating policies that resonate with your beliefs.

6. Engage in Your Community – Start small by getting involved in local issues. Attend town hall meetings, engage with community leaders, and volunteer for local initiatives. Use your talents and time to contribute positively to your community (1 Peter 4:10).

7. Advocate for Justice – Advocate for policies that reflect God’s heart for justice. This could involve writing letters to representatives, being a voice to the voiceless, participating in peaceful demonstrations, or joining advocacy groups that align with your values (Isaiah 1:17).

8. Build Relationships – Politics is relational. Build connections with fellow believers and collaborate with others who share your vision for a just society (Proverbs 18:24; 27:17).

9. Mentor Other Believers – Inspire fellow Christians to engage in politics. Share your journey and walk them through the necessary processes of actualising their political aspirations (Hebrews 10:24).

CONCLUSION

Let us rise to the occasion as we actively participate in the political sphere and remain steadfast in faith.

QUESTIONS

1. What danger is inherent in not participating in politics as a Christian?

2. Mention two biblical bases for Christians to get involved in politics.

Managing your emotions in adversity

Acts 23:2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered those who stood near him to strike him on the mouth.
Acts 23:3 Then Paul said to him, God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit as a judge to try me in accordance with the Law, and yet in defiance of the Law you order me to be struck?
Acts 23:4 Those who stood near exclaimed, Do you rail at and insult the high priest of God?
Acts 23:5 And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was a high priest; for the Scripture says, You shall not speak ill of a ruler of your people. [Exod. 22:28.]

Genuine strength is revealed in adversity. When we are faced with challenges, our true character is tested. If we crumble under pressure, it's a sign that our strength is lacking.

Adversity is a refining fire that reveals our inner fortitude. It's easy to be strong when life is smooth, but it's in the tough times that we discover our true strength. In the passage under consideration, Paul faces an unpleasant situation where his integrity and conscience were tested.

We see Paul show a rare strength of character in a very difficult time. May the lord multiply grace upon you to remain true to character under pressure in the name of Jesus, amen!!

1.. The Unpleasant Situation.
* Unjust treatment: Paul is struck by the high priest's order, an unjust and harsh treatment (Acts 23:2).
* Emotional response: Paul's initial reaction is indignation, a natural response to unfairness (Acts 23:3). We all do this sometimes, but how we recover quickly when we realise our mistakes is the real deal.

2.. Integrity and Conscience.
* Apologizing for offense: When made aware of his mistake, Paul apologizes, showing humility and a commitment to integrity (Acts 23:5). This is Grace in action.
* Trusting God's sovereignty: Paul trusts God's sovereignty, knowing He'll bring justice (Acts 23:11). No matter what, God will be glorified when we honour Him.

3.. Applying Integrity and Conscience.
* Self-reflection: Reflect on your actions and attitudes, acknowledging areas for improvement. Take a pause and ask for the right way, follow it.
* Apologize and make amends: It is Honourable to Apologize when wrong, making amends when possible.
* Trust God's sovereignty: Trust God's plan and timing, even in unpleasant situations.

It is incombent on us as believers to maintain integrity and conscience, even in challenging situations. I pray that you trust God's ability to keep you victorious, this will help you strive to reflect His character at all times
