Spirit, Soul, and Body – Three in One

One of the greatest truths in Scripture is that every human being is made up of three parts: spirit, soul, and body. Although these three parts work together as one person, each has a different purpose.

Understanding the difference between the spirit, soul, and body helps us to:

Grow spiritually.

Understand temptation and spiritual warfare.

Live a balanced Christian life.

Develop a closer relationship with God.

Just as God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three Persons yet one God (Matthew 28:19), man is also created as spirit, soul, and body—three parts yet one person.

1. God Created Man as Spirit, Soul, and Body

Genesis 2:7

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

Notice the three stages:

A. The Body
God formed Adam from the dust.

The body is the physical part everyone can see.

B. The Spirit
God breathed into Adam.

That breath represents spiritual life from God.

C. The Soul
When spirit entered the body, Adam became a living soul.

Therefore:

Body + Spirit = Living Soul

2. What Is the Body?

Genesis 2:7

Romans 12:1

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The body is the physical house where we live.

It allows us to:

Walk

Eat

Speak

Work

See

Hear

Touch

The body connects us to the physical world.

The Five Physical Senses
Seeing

Hearing

Smelling

Tasting

Touching

Without the body, we cannot interact physically.

Paul says our body is God's temple.

"Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost..." (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Lessons
Keep your body holy.

Avoid immorality.

Take care of your health.

Use your body to serve God.

3. What Is the Soul?

Matthew 22:37, Psalm 103:1, Hebrews 10:39

The soul is the center of your personality.

The soul contains:

Mind

Will

Emotions

The Mind
Where you think.

Romans 12:2 tells believers to renew their minds.

The Will
Where you make decisions.

Joshua said:

"Choose you this day whom ye will serve..." (Joshua 24:15)

Emotions

Love

Joy

Fear

Anger

Compassion

Sadness

All these belong to the soul.

4. What Is the Spirit?

John 4:24, Romans 8:16, Proverbs 20:27

The spirit is the deepest part of man.

It is the part that:

Knows God

Worships God

Receives revelation

Hears God's voice

Communicates with the Holy Spirit

Jesus said:

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." (John 4:24)

Without a living spirit, no one can truly know God.

5. Understanding Their Different Functions

BODY: Connects with the physical world.

Needs:

Food

Water

Rest

Exercise

SOUL: Connects with yourself.

Needs:

Knowledge

Wisdom

Emotional healing

Renewal through God's Word

SPIRIT: Connects with God.

Needs:

Prayer

Worship

Fellowship

The Holy Spirit

The Word of God

Illustration

Think of a car.

The Body
The car itself.

The Soul
The driver making decisions.

The Spirit
The engine power that makes the car alive.

Without the engine, the car cannot move.

Without the driver, it has no direction.

Without the body, neither the driver nor the engine can transport people.

Likewise, humans function through all three working together.

6. Which Part Should Control Your Life?

Galatians 5:16-17

Romans 8:5-6

God wants the spirit, guided by the Holy Spirit, to rule over the soul and body.

Wrong Order

Body → Soul → Spirit

This leads to:

Sin

Fleshly desires

Worldliness

Right Order

Spirit → Soul → Body

This leads to:

Holiness

Wisdom

Peace

Victory

7. The Battle Between Flesh and Spirit

Galatians 5:16-26

Romans 7:22-25

Every believer experiences warfare.

The body desires sinful pleasure.

The spirit desires God's will.

The soul decides whom to obey.

That is why renewing the mind is essential.

8. What Happens at Salvation?

John 3:3-6

2 Corinthians 5:17

Ezekiel 36:26-27

When someone is born again:

The Spirit
Is made alive to God.

The Soul
Begins a lifelong process of transformation as the mind, will, and emotions are renewed by God's Word.

The Body
Remains mortal and still experiences weakness, awaiting resurrection and glorification when Christ returns (Romans 8:23; Philippians 3:20–21).

10. Signs of an Unhealthy Spirit, Soul, or Body

Spiritual coldness

Easily overcome by temptation

11. Jesus Is the Perfect Example

Luke 2:52
"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Jesus grew in every area:

Body (stature): Physical growth.

Soul (wisdom): Intellectual and emotional maturity.

Spirit (favor with God): Deep fellowship and obedience to the Father.

Relationships (favor with man): Healthy interaction with others.

He demonstrates balanced growth for every believer.

Practical Applications

Care for your body because it belongs to God.

Renew your soul daily through Scripture.

Strengthen your spirit through prayer, worship, and obedience.

Let the Holy Spirit guide your decisions instead of your emotions or physical desires.

Pursue growth in every area of life, not just one.

Conclusion

God did not create us as merely physical beings. We are spirit, soul, and body, designed to live in fellowship with Him. The body enables us to function on earth, the soul expresses our personality, and the spirit connects us with God. A mature Christian allows the Holy Spirit to lead the spirit, the spirit to influence the soul, and the soul to direct the body in obedience to Christ.

As Paul prayed:

"And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." — 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating us as spirit, soul, and body. Help us to surrender every part of our lives to You. Strengthen our spirit through Your Holy Spirit, renew our minds with Your Word, and enable us to honor You with our bodies. May our whole being be kept holy and blameless until the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

*Before Making a Promise*

Ecclesiastes 5:4–5 (KJV)
"When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it... Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay."

Making a promise is a serious matter, especially when it is made before God or to another person.

Many people make promises in moments of excitement, fear, or desperation without counting the cost.

God desires honesty and faithfulness more than empty words.

*Before making a promise:*

* *Think before you speak.*

Proverbs 20:25 – "It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry."

* *Count the cost* .
Do not promise what you cannot fulfill. God expects us to be faithful to our commitments.

Luke 14:28 – "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost..."

* *Let your words be truthful.*

Jesus taught that our "Yes" should mean yes and our "No" should mean no.

Matthew 5:37 – "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay..."

* *Keep every promise you make.*
A faithful believer reflects God's character by honoring commitments.

Psalm 15:4 – "...He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not."

A promise is not just a statement—it is a commitment. Before making one, pray, think carefully, and be sure you are willing and able to keep it. God honors those who are faithful to their word.

Lord, give us wisdom to speak carefully and the grace to keep every promise we make.

Uncheck Desire

Desire is not always evil. The desire to know God, to grow, to work, and to serve is good.

However, unchecked desire becomes dangerous when it is not surrendered to God. What begins as a simple craving can grow into temptation, sin, and eventually destruction.

Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

1. Unchecked Desire Draws Us Away From God
James 1:14 teaches that temptation starts when a person is drawn away by his own desires.

Many believers do not fall suddenly; they drift gradually because they allow wrong desires to remain in their hearts.

Example: The desire for wealth, pleasure, recognition, or revenge can slowly take the place of God in our hearts.

2. Unchecked Desire Produces Sin
James 1:15 says, “When lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin.”

A thought that is entertained becomes an action. What we repeatedly desire eventually controls our behavior.

David’s story shows this clearly. His uncontrolled desire led him into adultery and murder.

3. Unchecked Desire Brings Destruction
Sin never remains small. It affects our relationship with God, our family, our peace, and our future.

James 1:15 ends with a warning: “Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

How to Overcome Unchecked Desire
Guard your heart. –

Renew your mind with God’s Word. –

Walk in the Spirit. –

Pray continually. –

Conclusion

Unchecked desire is like a small spark that can burn down a whole forest.

God calls us to examine our hearts daily and surrender every desire to Him. When our desires are controlled by the Holy Spirit, they become instruments for God’s glory instead of tools of destruction.

– “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Closing Prayer

“Lord, search my heart and remove every unchecked desire that can lead me away from You.

Fill me with holy desires, give me the strength to resist temptation, and help me walk in obedience every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

VENGEANCE BELONGS TO GOD

Many people are hurt by betrayal, injustice, false accusations, and oppression. Our natural reaction is often to seek revenge.

"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves... for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

Romans:19

However, God commands His children not to repay evil with evil. Instead, we should commit every painful situation into His hands.

God is the righteous Judge. He sees every hidden act, every tear, and every injustice. At the right time, He will defend His children and repay every evil according to His perfect justice.

Waiting on God's vengeance is an act of faith and trust.

As believers, our responsibility is to forgive, pray, and continue doing what is right. When we leave vengeance to God, He fights our battles, gives us peace, and brings lasting victory.

Prayer:

Lord, I surrender every hurt and injustice into Your hands. Fight my battles, vindicate me, and let Your righteous judgment prevail in every area of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God Cannot Forget You

Like a nursing mother, God’s love is constant and unforgettable

1. God Himself uses the mother’s love as His illustration
The clearest picture is in Isaiah:

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” Isaiah 49:15

A nursing mother is bonded to her child by instinct, sacrifice, and deep love. Sleepless nights, constant care — she’s tuned to every cry. Yet God says: Even if that bond could break, Mine never will.

2. You are engraved on His hands
The next verse makes it personal:

“Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.” Isaiah 49:16

In ancient times, servants carved their master’s name on their hand. God says your name is permanently marked on Him. A mother may be separated from her child, but God keeps you in His sight always.

3. God remembers you in your weakest moments

Nursing seasons are exhausting. You’re giving, pouring out, often unseen. God sees that:

• He remembers your tears: Psalm 56:8 — “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle.”

• He knows your needs before you ask: Matthew 6:32 — “Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.”

• He strengthens you as you care for others: Isaiah 40:11 — “He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.”

4. What to do when you feel forgotten

1. Speak it back to God: Pray Isaiah 49:15 aloud. “Lord, You said You cannot forget me.”

2. Look for evidence: Like a mother notices small movements, notice God’s small mercies — strength for one more night, a child’s laugh, a friend’s text. Lamentations 3:22-23 — “His mercies are new every morning.”

3. Rest in His hold: You don’t have to hold everything. 1 Peter 5:7 — “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Conclusion
A nursing mother might be distracted for a moment, but God never nods off. Psalm 121:4 — “Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”

If you’re holding a child today and wondering if God holds you, the answer is yes. You are seen, remembered, and loved with a love that outlasts even a mother’s.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that even when I feel alone, You have not forgotten me. Engrave that truth on my heart today. Help me rest in Your constant love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WAIT FOR YOUR TIME

One of the most difficult lessons in the Christian journey is learning to wait. We live in a world that celebrates speed, instant results, and immediate gratification. However, God often works through seasons of waiting to prepare His children for His promises.

Many believers become discouraged when prayers seem unanswered, opportunities appear delayed, and breakthroughs do not come according to their expectations. Yet God's timing is perfect. What He has promised will come to pass at the appointed time.

Today, God is reminding you: Wait for your time.

1. God Has an Appointed Time for Everything

Ecclesiastes 3:1
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."

Nothing in God's kingdom happens by accident. Every blessing, promotion, breakthrough, marriage, ministry, and financial increase has a divine timetable.

Just because it has not happened yet does not mean it will never happen.

Example:

Joseph received dreams as a teenager but waited many years before becoming governor in Egypt. The delay was preparation, not denial.

2. Waiting Is a Season of Preparation

Isaiah 40:31
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..."

God often uses waiting seasons to:

Build our faith
Develop our character
Strengthen our patience
Teach dependence on Him
Prepare us for greater responsibilities

Many people want the blessing but are not ready for the responsibility that comes with it.

God prepares the person before releasing the promise.

3. Do Not Compare Your Journey with Others

Galatians 6:4
"But let every man prove his own work..."

Comparison is one of the greatest enemies of destiny.

Someone else's testimony is not your timetable.

God may bless one person today and bless another tomorrow. Your season is unique because your assignment is unique.

Keep your eyes on God, not on people's progress.

4. Delay Is Not Denial

Psalm 27:14
"Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart..."

When God delays something, it is often because:

He has something better.
He is protecting you.
He is arranging circumstances.
He is building your faith.

What seems late to man is never late to God.

When your appointed time arrives, no power can stop your blessing.

5. Remain Faithful While Waiting

Luke 16:10
"He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much."

Do not stop praying because the answer has not come.

Do not stop serving because the reward has not appeared.

Do not stop believing because the miracle is delayed.

Keep working.
Keep trusting.
Keep praising.
Keep obeying.

Your faithfulness today is preparing you for tomorrow's testimony.

6. God's Timing Is Always Perfect

Psalm 102:13
"Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come."

There is a set time for divine favor.

There is a set time for restoration.

There is a set time for promotion.

There is a set time for your breakthrough.

When that time comes, doors will open that no man can shut.

Conclusion

Do not give up because things seem slow.

Do not lose hope because prayers appear unanswered.

Do not abandon your dreams because the journey is long.

The God who promised is faithful.

Your waiting season is not wasted. God is working behind the scenes.

At the appointed time, your testimony will speak.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You because Your timing is perfect. Help me to trust You while I wait. Give me strength, patience, wisdom, and faith to remain steadfast. Let every promise You have spoken concerning my life come to pass in Your appointed time. I reject discouragement and embrace hope. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Today, we celebrate and honor all fathers for their love, sacrifices, leadership, and commitment to their families.

A godly father is a blessing from God, guiding his home in faith, wisdom, and integrity.

"The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him." — Proverbs 20:7

May every father remain strong in faith, steadfast in love, and fruitful in every good work.

Your labor is not in vain, and God sees every sacrifice made for your family. Keep trusting Him, leading by example, and raising generations that will serve the Lord.

Today, we pray that You will bless every father with strength, wisdom, good health, and divine protection.

Lord, help them to lead their families according to Your will. Grant them grace to be loving, patient, responsible, and faithful in all they do.

May their homes be filled with peace, joy, and Your presence. Let every father experience success in his work, favor in his endeavors, and fulfillment in his calling.

For fathers facing challenges, be their comfort and strength. For those who have sacrificed greatly for their families, reward them abundantly.

May their children rise up and call them blessed, and may they leave a legacy of faith that will impact generations.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
