SYMBOLS OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE:
WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN

On the night of the Easter Vigil, in total darkness, a single flame is lit.
Not for decoration.
Not for tradition alone.
But to proclaim something eternal.

The Paschal Candle represents Jesus Christ - risen, victorious, and present among His people. Every symbol placed on it is not random. Each one is a message, carefully preserved by the Church through centuries of worship.

THE CROSS: THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING
At the heart of the candle is the Cross.
This is not symbolic placement, it is theological truth. The Cross stands at the center because it is the way through which salvation came. Christ did not rise apart from the Cross; He rose through it. The Church places it at the center to remind us that there is no resurrection without sacrifice, no victory without surrender.

Α & Ω: THE BEGINNING AND THE END
Above and below the Cross are the Greek letters Alpha and Omega.
They declare that Christ is not bound by time. He is the beginning of all things and the end toward which everything moves. Before anything existed, He is. After everything passes, He remains. This is why the priest proclaims: “Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end.”

THE YEAR: LORD OF THIS MOMENT
Inscribed on the candle is the current year.
This is one of the most overlooked but powerful signs. It reminds us that Christ is not only Lord of history, but Lord of now. He reigns in this present time - in our world, our struggles, and our lives today. The Resurrection is not a past event; it is a present reality.

THE FIVE GRAINS OF INCENSE: THE WØUNDS THAT REMAIN
Five grains of incense are inserted into the Cross.
They represent the five wounds of Christ - His hands, His feet, and His side. Even in His risen glory, the marks of His Pâssion remain. This teaches us that His victory did not erase His süffering, it fulfilled it. The wøunds are no longer signs of defeat, but signs of love.

THE FLAME: THE LIGHT THAT CANNOT BE OVERCOME
When the candle is lit, the priest proclaims:
“The Light of Christ.”
This flame represents the risen Christ who conquers darkness. From this one flame, all other candles in the church are lit. This is not just a rįtual, it is a proclamation that faith is received and shared. Light spreads, not by division, but by giving.

THE LIGHT: CHRIST AMONG US
The candle itself stands and burns throughout the Easter season.
It is placed near the altar, then near the ambo, and later near the baptismal font. It appears at baptisms and fünerals, reminding us that the same Christ who rose from the dęad is the one who gives life, accompanies us, and leads us into eternity.

THE LAMB: MEEKNESS AND SÂCRIFICE
Often, the image of the Lamb is placed on the candle.
This points to Christ as the Lamb of God - gentle, silent, and offered for the salvation of the world. It is a reminder that His power was not shown through force, but through säcrifice. The Lamb reveals the true nature of divine strength.

FINAL THOUGHT
The Paschal Candle is not just a symbol.
It is a declaration.
That the Cross still stands…
that Christ still reigns…and that His light…
can never be overcome.

Be Prayerful.
