NIGERIA- Your Miracle Begins with a ‘Yes’

On the Sunday of the Paralytic, Metropolitan Nikodemus of the Archdiocese of Nigeria offered a profound reflection on the deeper meaning of healing presented in the Gospel. He emphasized that paralysis is not only a physical condition, but more importantly a spiritual reality that affects the soul when it loses hope.

Drawing from the message of the day, His Eminence noted that many people experience moments of abandonment, often expressing the painful sentiment, “I have no one.” Yet, he reminded the faithful that even in such moments, Christ is never absent. On the contrary, Christ is already present, standing before each person, ready to restore and renew.

Metropolitan Nikodemus highlighted that the beginning of healing requires a personal response. A simple yet sincere “yes” to Christ opens the way for transformation, allowing the grace of God to act in one’s life. It is through this willingness that the miracle of restoration begins.

Referencing the words of the Gospel, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk” (John 5:8), he underscored that this command is not only historical but remains a living call to every believer today—to rise from spiritual paralysis, to regain strength, and to walk forward in faith.

He concluded his message with the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection, affirming the enduring hope of the faithful: Christ is Risen.

On the Sunday of the Paralytic, we learn something simple yet powerful:
it is not only the body that becomes paralyzed, but also the soul when it loses hope.

Even when we say, “I have no one,”
Christ is already standing before us.

All it takes is a small “yes” from us, and then the miracle begins.

“Rise, take up your bed, and walk.”
(Gospel of John 5:8)

From the very first moment of my arrival in Nigeria, through personal efforts and through the trust and respect that Mr. Barnabas shows towards my person, many important opportunities and meaningful collaborations have gradually opened for the benefit of our Holy Metropolis and the wider missionary presence of the Orthodox Church in Nigeria.

With great joy and thanksgiving to the Triune God, my stay in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, was marked by the official presentation of the architectural plans for the new Orthodox Church to be built in the city by Mr. Barnabas Barnabas, President of Vita Construction, who is personally undertaking, with full funding, both the design and the construction of the project. At the same time, he presented to me the distinctive architectural vision and the innovative features that will characterize the new Holy Church.

This is a particularly important project, which will serve as a spiritual landmark and point of reference for Orthodoxy in the capital of Nigeria. The Holy Church will be dedicated to the Holy Apostle Barnabas, founder and protector of the Church of Cyprus, becoming a meaningful spiritual bridge of witness and unity.

With gratitude to God, we share a beautiful moment from the Orthodox Communities of Benue State.
Today, through the ministry of Fr. Andrew Ioraver, 17 people were baptized and became members of the Orthodox Church, reborn “by water and the Spirit.”
Moments like these fill our hearts with hope and show that the work of the Orthodox Mission in Nigeria continues to bear fruit. ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ!
