TITLE: JUDGMENT, JUSTICE, MERCY AT THE CROSS.
Text: Job 8:3 NKJV + John 19:30 NKJV
Job 8:3
“Does God subvert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert justice?”_
John 19:30
“...He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”_
INTRODUCTION
There’s a question that has troubled hearts since Job’s day. Bildad asked it in Job 8:3: _“Would God ever twist justice? Would the Almighty corrupt what is right?”_
We all want to know: Can God be fair and still forgive me? Can He punish sin and still pardon the sinner? If He’s just, how can He be merciful? If He’s merciful, how can He be just?
For centuries that tension hung in the air… until one day, on a hill called Calvary, it was resolved.
John 19:30 gives us the answer in these words: _“It is finished!”
Greek: Tetelestai = “Paid in full.”
At the cross, the question of Job 8:3 meets the declaration of John 19:30.
God did not subvert judgment. He did not pervert justice. Instead, He satisfied both.
On that cross, Justice demanded a penalty. Judgment pronounced the sentence. And Mercy provided the Substitute.
Today we’re going to see how the cross is the only place where God can be _“just and the justifier”_ [Rom 3:26]. Where the scale of justice stays balanced, and the sinner still walks free.
Let’s look at how Judgment, Justice, and Mercy all kissed at the cross.
________
1: From the Question to the Problem.
Bildad asked the right question in Job 8:3 — ‘Does God pervert justice?’ But he never saw the answer. The problem is this: God’s justice demands punishment for sin [Rom 6:23], and His judgment says ‘guilty’ [John 3:18]. So how can any of us stand? That brings us to our first point…
Point 1: Justice at the Cross - The Scale That Could Not Bend.
2: From the Problem to the Verdict.
If justice must be satisfied, then judgment must be executed. Someone has to pay. The courtroom of heaven could not ignore sin. So God did what no human judge could do. Which leads us to our second point…
Point 2: Judgment at the Cross - The Sentence That Was Served
3: From the Verdict to the Victory
But here’s the miracle, church. While justice demanded death and judgment pronounced guilt, heaven heard a different voice. Not the gavel... but the cry, ‘It is finished!’ [John 19:30]. That cry changes everything. So finally…
Point 3: Mercy at the Cross - The Love That Paid It All
_______
Now, let's critically look at the points we raised:
Point 1: Justice at the Cross - The Scale That Could Not Bend -
Based on Job 8:3 — “Does God pervert justice?”_
Before mercy could flow, God’s justice had to be satisfied. The cross proves God never lowers His standard. He meets it.
Justice is God’s Unchanging Standard
Deut 32:4 NKJV
“For all His ways are justice”_
Hebrew/Greek:_Tsedeq_ / _dikaiosynē_ means God is the plumb line. Sin is not a small mistake to Him. It’s rebellion against the holy God. That’s why “the wages of sin is death” [Rom 6:23].
God can’t wink at sin and still be God. If He did, He would pervert justice. And Job 8:3 says He won’t. The scale must stay true.
Justice Was Satisfied, Not Suspended.
Rom 3:25-26 NKJV
“...to demonstrate His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier”_
God didn’t cancel the debt. He collected it. Every lie, every bitterness, every hidden sin — the full penalty was poured out. But it was poured out on Jesus, not us [Isa 53:5].
At Calvary, justice didn’t take a day off. It went to work. The difference is, the One on the bench stepped down and took our seat.
Let's Illustrate it this way:
“The Judge and His Son”
Imagine you’re in court, guilty. The fine is one million naira and you can’t pay. The Judge is your father. He has 2 options:
1. Let you go free = He corrupts justice and stops being a just judge. (This is possible in Nigerian courts or any other human court)
2. Make you pay = You go to prison and the law is honored._
But love finds a third way. The Judge removes his robe, steps down, writes the check from his own account, and pays your fine in full. The law is honored. The debt is paid. And the son walks free. Praise the Lord!!!
_That’s the cross. God didn’t suspend justice. He satisfied it — with His Son.”_ Hallelujah!!
Point 2:
But paying the fine is one thing. Someone still has to hear the verdict. Which brings us to... Judgment at the Cross - The Sentence That Was Served.
Based on John 19:30 — “It is finished!”
Greek: Tetelestai_
Justice demanded payment. Judgment demanded a verdict. At the cross, the sentence for sin was carried out — not on us, but on Jesus.
Judgment is God’s Courtroom Verdict.
John 5:22 NKJV
“For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son”_
Greek: Krisis = the process, the trial, the separation of guilty from innocent.
Every one of us stands guilty before God’s court [Rom 3:23]. The evidence is our thoughts, words, and deeds. The verdict of _krisis_ is clear: “Guilty.” And the sentence of _krima_ is death [Rom 6:23].
God doesn’t ignore the case file. He opens it. He reads it. And He renders the only righteous verdict. But watch what happens next…
The Verdict Was Executed on Jesus
2 Cor 5:21 NKJV
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us”_
The gavel came down at Calvary. Every sin we’ve committed — past, present, future — was legally transferred to Jesus. He didn’t just die “for” us. He was judged “as” us. That’s substitution. Hallelujah!!!
When Jesus cried ‘It is finished’, He wasn’t talking about His suffering ending. He was signing the court document. Case closed. Sentence served. Paid in full — Tetelestai.
“The Prisoner Exchange”
In WWII, there was a story of a prisoner sentenced to death. On the morning of ex*****on, the warden walked in with shocking news: ‘Someone volunteered to take your place.’ A free man walked into the death chamber so a guilty man could walk out._
That’s exactly what happened at the cross. The sentence of death that had your name on it was read out… but when they looked at the prisoner, it was Jesus. He stepped into the dock. He took the judgment. And we got His freedom.”_
God didn’t pretend we were innocent. He made us innocent by judging Jesus guilty in our place.
So justice was honored. Judgment was executed. But how could God do that and still love us? Because behind justice and judgment stood something even greater. Which brings us to our final point... Mercy at the Cross - The Love That Paid It All.
Point 3:
Mercy at the Cross - The Love That Paid It All.
Based on John 19:30 + Psalm 85:10 NKJV — “Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed.”
Justice demanded payment. Judgment pronounced guilt. But mercy made a way. At the cross, God’s _ḥesed/eleos_ did what the law could not — it set the guilty free.
Mercy is God’s Covenant Love in Action.
Eph 2:4-5 NKJV
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”_
*Greek: Eleos = the NT word for Hebrew _ḥesed_. It’s not pity. It’s loyal, covenant love that refuses to give up on you.
Mercy doesn’t cancel justice. It absorbs the cost of justice. God didn’t say “sin doesn’t matter.” He said “I’ll pay for it Myself.” Oh! Glory to God!
Judgment said “Guilty”, Justice asked, ‘Who will pay?’ and Mercy answered, ‘I will.’”_
Mercy and Justice Kissed at the Cross.
Rom 3:26 NKJV
“...that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”_
This is the miracle of Psalm 85:10. Two things that should be enemies — truth/righteousness and mercy — kissed. How? Because Jesus took the wrath we deserved so we could get the love we didn’t deserve.
At Calvary, the scale of justice stayed balanced, and the heart of God stayed tender. He didn’t choose between being holy and being loving. In Christ, He is both.”_
Let's Illustrate it this way:
“The Check and the Love Letter”
Picture this: You owe a debt you can never repay. The court sends you 2 things in one envelope.
First, a check. Signed by Jesus. Memo line: ‘Paid in full. Tetelestai.’ That’s justice + judgment satisfied.
Second, a love letter. It says: ‘I did this because I love you. Not because you earned it. Come home.’ That’s mercy._
_The cross gives you both. The check clears your record. The letter restores your relationship.” Glory to Jesus!!
The cross isn’t just where God punished sin. It’s where God proved His love. Romans 5:8 — ‘While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’”_
Conclusion/Call to Response:
Job 8:3 asked if God would pervert justice. John 19:30 answered: No. He perfected it. The question for you today isn’t ‘Is God fair?’ The question is, ‘Will you receive the mercy He bought with justice?’ Ahaa!!
If you’ve been running from God because you think He’s only Judge… come see Him as Father. The gavel has already come down on Jesus. Now the arms are open for you.”_
__________
Altar Call: “The Gavel Has Come Down”
Beloved, remember Bildad’s question from Job 8:3 — ‘Does God pervert justice?’ Today John 19:30 gave us the answer: ‘It is finished.’_
The gavel of God’s judgment has already come down. It didn’t come down on us. It came down on Jesus. Justice was satisfied. The sentence was served. Mercy was released._
So the question isn’t ‘Can God forgive me?’ The question is, ‘Will you receive what Jesus already paid for?’_
Maybe you’re here feeling guilty. You think your sin is too big. Friend, no sin is bigger than the cross. The same blood that paid for murderers, liars, and the broken paid for you too._
Maybe you’ve been trying to earn God’s love. Trying to be ‘good enough’. Stop. You don’t earn a gift. You receive it. Tetelestai means ‘Paid in full’. Your debt is cleared._
In a moment I’m going to pray. If you’ve never surrendered to Jesus, or if you’ve drifted and want to come home, this is your moment. While every head is bowed and every eye closed, just lift your hand where you are. That’s you saying, ‘Jesus, I receive Your mercy. I trust Your finished work.’ No one is looking at you except God, and He’s leaning in with love right now._
Jesus, You see every hand. You hear every silent cry. Come into these lives right now…
Closing Prayer:
“Father, thank You that You did not pervert justice, but You perfected it at the cross. Thank You that Your mercy and truth kissed at Calvary.
For every person who just surrendered: write their name in the Lamb’s Book of Life right now. Wash them in the blood of Jesus. Make them brand new. Let them walk out of here knowing the case is closed — not guilty, because Jesus took the guilt.
For every believer here: Remind us daily that we serve the God who is both just and justifier. Let us never take the cross for granted. Let us walk in _ḥesed/eleos_ — covenant love — toward others, because we’ve been shown it first.
We seal this word in Jesus’ name. And we declare with Him: It is finished! Amen.” 🙏
If you raised your hand or prayed that prayer, you’re not the same person you were 2 minutes ago. Welcome to the family of God in Christ Jesus.
