DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

“And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.” (Acts 8:30-31)

Understanding has been described as the operational knowledge of something complex. It is one thing to know a place, like a village. It is another thing to understand their language. You may know a place through study, but not know how to survive there. How do you live among a people whose language and culture you don’t understand?

This Ethiopian eu**ch just got a new believe he was yet to truly understand, “for he had come to Jerusalem to worship” (Acts 8:27). He has taken much interest in the religion, so he reads to know more. But he finds it hard to understand. Then Philip showed up from nowhere. It doesn’t really matter where the helper comes from especially when you’re on a crossroad, and you’re in search of answers.

Do you understand what you are reading? Philip asked the eu**ch, and he answered, “Well, how could I understand unless someone guides me [correctly]?” (Acts 8:30-31 Amp). So Philip got an invitation to explain to him. Please note that this is no proof that the scriptures are hard to understand and that one must have an authorized interpreter. Every child of God has an abiding teacher Who teaches all subjects. He is the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17; 16:13; 1 John 2:27).

To understand the truth about a subject such as the gospel, it is always good to be told the whole story from the beginning. That was what Philip did to rescue the eu**ch from his state of lack of understanding (Acts 8:35). He showed him by the sacred books that Jesus is the Messiah and that He recently fulfilled the words of the prophets by His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension to heaven. This eventually led to the baptism of the eu**ch as a sign of His full inclusion into the family of God, identifying with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection (Acts 8:36-39). What a happy ending. The eu**ch went his way rejoicing to proof he now has full understanding (v 39).

Let us pray: Father, thank You for giving us Pastors and Teachers according to Your heart to feed us with knowledge and understanding. Let every difficult areas of our lives receive illumination in Jesus’ name, Amen. (Jer. 3:15; Eph. 4:11).

CORNELIUS, CLEAN

“34 Opening his mouth, Peter said: “Most certainly I understand now that God is not one to show partiality [to people as though Gentiles were excluded from God’s blessing],
35 But in every nation the person who fears God and does what is right [by seeking Him] is acceptable and welcomed by Him.” (Acts 10:34-35 Amp)

The household of Cornelius heard the good news for the first time, and they believed. They were prepared for it. An angel of the Lord had first appeared to Cornelius prompting him to invite Peter into his house to hear the Word from his mouth. And Cornelius gathered his family members and mandated everyone to pay attention to what they were about to receive. The Bible says, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message” (Acts 10:44). The Holy Spirit confirmed God’s acceptance of Gentiles. God confirmed that Gentiles are allowed to walk in through the Way to eternal life through the ministry of Peter.

God dealt with Peter earlier prior to the arrival of Cornelius’ servant. He was never going to accept this invitation, but God explained it to him in a vision. He fell into a trance, and God gave him this new order: “What God has cleansed and pronounced clean, no longer consider it common or unholy” (Acts 10:15).

We must understand that this passage of scriptures is the beginning of the acceptance of the Gentiles into the agenda of God, into the kingdom of God. And this invitation is open-ended. There are many Cornelius that are yet to be included into the fold. This is confirmed through the words of Jesus: “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” (John 10:16)

The door of eternal life is opened to whosoever will come in through Jesus. It’s that simple. And the household of Cornelius is a proof of this reality.

Let’s pray: Father, thank You for the free gift of eternal life extended to all that believes in You through Your Son Jesus. Let everyone still outside be invited inside just like Cornelius and his household, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BORN OF THE SPIRIT

“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:4)

The same way Jesus has dual birth record, He has pre-designed that we so do. When you go through the genealogy of Christ as recorded in Matthew 1:1-17, you will see the earthly lineage of Jesus. But that was narrowed down to one sentence in Rom. 1:3. Amplified Bible puts it this way: Jesus “as to the flesh [His human nature], was born a descendant of David [to fulfil the covenant promises]”. Let’s look closely at verse 4: “and [as to His divine nature] according to the Spirit of holiness was openly designated to be the Son of God with power [in a triumphant and miraculous way] by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Hence Jesus has dual birth record. There was the birth occasioned by the flesh [His human nature]; and there was the birth unto life after death through the Spirit of holiness [His divine nature]. This means Jesus came twice to the earth. At first He was born in a manger by the Virgin Mary (Luke 2:6-7), and then after His resurrection He appeared first to Mary at the tomb. He was born again (John 20:11-18). Through His resurrection, the Holy Spirit approved that the name of Jesus is now empowered (Rom. 1:4).

So many things happened at the resurrection of Jesus. Let’s study further reading 1 Cor. 15:45-50.

“45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.
48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
49 And as we have born the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.”

1. From the above scriptures, we understand that Jesus is the last Adam. He was empowered to quicken the spirit of man after His resurrection. Hence, through Him and in His name we have been born of the Spirit into the family of God (vrs 45-46; John 3:5-7, 14-16, 34-36; 5:21-29).
2. Our salvation is from heaven (vrs 47-49).
3. We have dual birth as of Christ; earthly and heavenly (vrs 48-49).
4. We are born again, born of the Spirit, and not of corruptible seed; but by the Word of God (vrs 50; 1 Pet. 1:18-25).
5. It is our Spirit birth that guarantees us access to the Kingdom of God (vrs 50).

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, the God of the spirits of all flesh, let our spirits be united with Yours till we meet in heaven to part no more, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

“But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” (1 Cor. 6:17).

BARNABAS, A GOOD MAN

“For he (Barnabas) was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.” (Acts 11:24)

There is nothing compared to having the testimony of the Word of God concerning you of how you are a good man. Such testimony was given concerning the man Moses in Num. 12:3. It is so rare to come across such authentication of the good nature inside a man. These are recommendations of faithful men. And we must all strive to be so numbered.

There is something so unique that must have distinguished Barnabas. He was faithful to what he believed. He was mentioned to have sold his landed property, a field belonging to him and brought the money and set it at the apostles’ feet (Acts 4:36-37).

He became a prominent figure in the early church, and very resourceful to the apostles. He was the one who brought Saul to the apostles, introducing him as a new convert of Christ (Acts 9:27). He was sent on several mission assignments of which he executed successfully (Acts 11:22-30). The church needed to send money to brethren at Judaea , and they sent it through Barnabas and Saul. They must have trusted Barnabas to deliver because Saul was still a young convert at that time (v 29-30).

Later on, in a special prayer meeting, the Holy Spirit ordained Barnabas and Paul for a special assignment (Acts 13:2). Nothing could be better than that. You see, passion for the things of God attracts favour to a believer. Even unbelievers are not left out of this. The only disadvantage of an unbeliever with a good heart is that they will not enjoy the full benefits of being good without salvation through Jesus. God had to reveal Himself to Cornelius, the Gentile, for him and his household to be saved, because he was a good man in his own right (Acts 10:2). To be good without Christ is to be good for nothing.

No matter how good a person can be, if the Spirit of God is not alive in an individual, the goodness will be short lived. Man cannot be good in the power of the flesh. Even the Disciples of Christ as at one time intended to start a massacre in the name of the Lord. But Jesus forbade them.

“And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.” (Luke 9:51-56)

There is grace for being good, and it is made available by the Holy Spirit. One of the fruits of the Spirit is goodness (Gal. 5:22). Grace proceeds from the Holy Spirit.

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.” (Zech. 4:6-7)

The virtue of goodness is a missing quality in most lives. And most importantly, we want to begin to see this quality in the lives of our political leaders. As political leaders, you are elected into office. We actually voted for you, it’s not your birth right. Don’t seek profit when people are dying. Seek the good of mankind.

Let us pray: Father, thank You for showing me the need to be good, and to know that I cannot be good by my own power. Fill me with Your goodness, and through me, let the world be a good place, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father (Acts 1:4-5). The purpose of this infilling is for believers to be empowered to witness Christ to the world (Acts 1:8). On the Day of Pentecost, 120 Disciples praying and watching received the sudden visitation of the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:1-4).

Peter and John were sent to the believers at Samaria. They prayed for them to receive the Holy Ghost. Then they laid hands on the believers, and they received the Holy Ghost (Acts 8:14-17).

Next in record was Apostle Paul whom Jesus converted. Ananias was sent to pray for him to receive his sight because he was blinded by the bright light from heaven. So, Ananias laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came to Damascus, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 9:17 Amp). So, Paul received his healing and baptism at the same time. It was not recorded that he spoke in tongues immediately. But Paul increased more and more in strength (Acts 9:22). And in his epistle to the Corinthians, he declared, “I thank God that I speak in [unknown] tongues more than all of you” (1 Cor. 14:18 Amp).

Next in record was the household of Cornelius, the Roman soldier. They were all baptised with the evidence of speaking in tongues when Peter spoke the Word of salvation to them. Through this experience, God confirmed His acceptance of Gentiles (Acts 10:44-48). So, the Gentiles version of the day of Pentecost visitation took place in the house of Cornelius because Peter said “they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did” (Acts 10:47 Amp).

At Ephesus, Paul laid hands on 12 disciples and the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in unknown tongues (Eph. 19:1-7). Throughout scriptures, it is evident that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is preceded by the outward manifestation of speaking in tongues. This experience comes first through a sincere thirst and longing of the heart. It is not enough to be saved, you must receive grace for continuity to walk this race to the end (Eph. 1:13-14).

Let us pray; Father, the divine experience my life requires, release it on me now in Jesus name, Amen. [Please go ahead and pray in the Spirit].

ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA

“3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” (Acts 5:3-4)

We should be careful the way we operate in the Church. The Church is not a commercial place. It is a spiritual house. From our text today, Ananias and Sapphira decided to join the company of “the big givers” in Church. But of course, those that had done such did so to further the course of the gospel, for the advancement of the kingdom of God among men. There was a great revival going on. People were giving willingly; selling their belongings and bringing the money to Church.

“32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” (Acts 4:32-37)

From our text in Acts 5:3-4, Ananias wanted everyone to think that he had turned over all the money from the sales, so secretly holding some back was essentially embezzling. If he had been honest and told Peter that he had kept some of the money, he would have done nothing wrong.

May we never be victim of lying to the Holy Spirit. How do you imagine it happening? How else than to disregard the integrity of God and to take for granted His holy presence as the Lord over the affairs of the Church. This was the undoing of Ananias and Sapphira. They wanted to meet up with class, with society without recognition for the place of sacrifice. That was the way of the Scribes and Pharisees, and Jesus said: “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 5:20)

Jesus classified the sins of the Scribes and Pharisees as hypocrisy and iniquity: “Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.” (Matt. 23:28) May our steps not contradict our belief. May we follow Christ correctly to the end.

“17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 BUT YE HAVE NOT SO LEARNED CHRIST;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” (Eph. 4:17-24)

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, ‘Keep back thy servant from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.’ (Psalm 19:13-14)

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (9)

“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.” (Gen. 6:14)

The Ark of the Covenant came from the same wisdom that built Noah’s ark. Noah was called to build an ark that would save humanity and animals. The ark is a picture of the vessel God used for His purposes. So what lesson can we learn from Noah and the ark?

The ark is a picture of our LIFE. You see, our lives are the vessels that God uses for His purposes. The ancient story of the ark is a modern picture of us.

We are RESPONSIBLE to build. Noah was responsible to BUILD the ark. Life is not about stumbling into our purpose; it’s about building our purpose. We must build according to divine plan.

“According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.” (Exo. 25:9)

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (8)

"Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me" (Hebrews 10:5)

The Ark of the Covenant and Noah's ark are typologies of the body of Christ (John 1:14; Matt. 1:21). Both arks were prepared just as Jesus has a prepared body.

The same way Noah preached righteousness to the people before the flood (2 Peter 2:5), Jesus sought after sinners to bring them to safety on board the Ark of His body which was made for the salvation of all men (Isaiah 53:4-5; Matt. 9:13). However, only the righteous shall be saved.

Noah's ark, like the body of Jesus, is the ark of salvation for the righteous.

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (7)

"And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly" (2 Peter 2:5)

Noah's ark was the ark of rescue from judgement for the righteous. The Ark of the Covenant as well enabled the Israelites to escape judgment because when you know the mind of God and adhere to His commandments you can have access to Redemption.

Noah preached to the people prior to the flood (2 Peter 2:5). They got the warning signs but were too sinful to repent. God determined His judgement to rescue the lives appointed to be saved by their stand for righteousness. Noah's ark was salvation for the righteous.

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (6)

“16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.” (Gen. 7: 16-22)

The same way Noah’s ark represents death to the wicked and corrupt generation, the Ark of the Covenant was instrumental to the ex*****on of judgement to the enemies of the people of God.

1 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our God.” (1 Sam. 5:1-7)
