The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Yaba College of Technology and Raotech IT Electro-mechanical Limited marks another defining moment in our collective journey towards technological advancement, innovation, and global relevance. This partnership, which will give birth to an Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Innovation Hub, is not merely an institutional agreement; it is a strategic investment in the future of our students, our nation, and the evolving digital economy.

At YABATECH, we have remained committed to positioning the institution as a leading hub for research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry-driven education. The world is rapidly changing, and institutions that fail to embrace emerging technologies risk being left behind. Today, we are proud to take another bold step towards ensuring that our students are not just consumers of technology but creators, innovators, and solution providers capable of competing globally.

I commend Raotech IT Electro-mechanical Limited, under the leadership of Mr. Oluwadamilare Olanrewaju, for their visionary commitment to talent development and technological empowerment over the past fifteen years. Their passion for nurturing young innovators aligns perfectly with the aspirations of YABATECH. This collaboration will undoubtedly provide our students and staff with opportunities for hands-on learning, professional certifications, entrepreneurship development, internships, and exposure to real-world innovation ecosystems.

I also appreciate the efforts of our Centre for Linkages, Partnerships and International Relations, led by Dr. Moshood Ajala, for facilitating this impactful collaboration. Their dedication to building strategic partnerships continues to open new frontiers for institutional growth and academic excellence.

As we celebrate this milestone, I encourage all stakeholders — staff, students, industry partners, and the larger academic community — to embrace this initiative with enthusiasm and commitment. The future belongs to institutions and individuals who are prepared to innovate, collaborate, and adapt. With this AI and Robotics Innovation Hub, YABATECH is once again demonstrating its readiness to lead from the front.

Indeed, this is not just the beginning of a project; it is the beginning of a transformative era for technology education and innovation at Yaba College of Technology.

I am deeply encouraged by the steady progress being made toward the transition of our great institution into a full-fledged University of Technology and Vocational Education. The Federal Government’s approval, as announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025, remains firmly on course, with legislative processes currently advancing at the National Assembly. While YABATECH continues to operate as a polytechnic pending the completion of necessary accreditation and regulatory procedures by the National Universities Commission, we remain optimistic and fully committed to this historic transformation.

This year’s matriculation of 17,130 students for the 2025/2026 academic session further reflects the confidence Nigerians continue to place in YABATECH. Beyond academic growth, the institution is also witnessing significant infrastructural and developmental expansion. With the approval of a ₦5 billion take-off intervention fund for a 13-storey building, an additional ₦2 billion for faculty development, ongoing expansion at the Epe campus, and the development of new hostels and academic facilities, YABATECH is positioning itself for a stronger future. Plans are also underway to establish new faculties such as Health Technology and Computing & Information Technology, all geared toward meeting the demands of a modern technological university.

As we welcome our newly admitted students, I encourage them to embrace discipline, innovation, entrepreneurship, and academic excellence. YABATECH remains committed to maintaining high moral and academic standards, with zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, and all forms of indiscipline. Together, we will continue to build an institution that not only preserves its legacy of excellence but also evolves to meet the future of education and national development.

A New Chapter for YABATECH: My Address to Our New Academic Leaders

When I stood before our newly appointed deans and heads of departments at last week’s induction workshop, I felt both the weight of responsibility and the promise of possibility. This was not a routine administrative exercise. It marked a defining moment in the evolving story of an institution that has shaped technical and higher education in Nigeria for nearly eight decades.

YABATECH stands at the threshold of transformation. As we approach our 80th anniversary, we are no longer simply preserving a legacy—we are deliberately constructing a future. That future is clear: the attainment of university status.

Let me be unequivocal about what this means—and what it requires of us.

We have commenced formal strategic engagements with the Federal Ministry of Education toward this transition. However, this ambition is not about designation alone; it is about distinction. We are not preparing to enter the university system to find our footing—we are preparing to lead. That vision demands excellence in research, innovation in teaching, and academic standards that can compete globally.

To our new academic leaders, my message was clear: leadership must be grounded in integrity, accountability, and a collective commitment to growth. The era of outdated teaching methodologies must give way to a culture defined by critical thinking, rigorous research, and intellectual curiosity. Every classroom and laboratory must reflect this shift.

Equally, I spoke candidly about our non-negotiables. Corruption, extortion, and any form of student exploitation will not be tolerated. They are not mere infractions—they are violations of the trust this institution represents. Heads of departments will be held accountable for the culture within their units. I have therefore directed that all approved student charges be transparently declared, in line with federal directives and in anticipation of the student loan framework.

Our campuses must remain safe, inclusive, and respectful environments—free from toxicity, victimisation, and administrative bias. To support this, I have called for the establishment of confidential reporting channels to ensure that concerns can be raised without fear.

Beyond governance and discipline, I have challenged our leaders to think entrepreneurially. YABATECH’s strategic location, vibrant student population, and institutional assets present immense opportunities. Within every department lies the potential for innovative and ethical revenue generation—and I expect this potential to be actively explored.

This is a defining season for YABATECH. Those I addressed are not merely administrators; they are architects of a new institutional era. With integrity as our foundation and innovation as our driving force, I am confident that we will build a future that inspires pride across our alumni network, our staff, and the nation at large.

The journey to the top begins now.

I was honoured to receive a high-level delegation from the World Bank and the IDEAS Project at the Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) IDEAS Training Centre, Lagos.

The visit, led by Mr. Mathew Verghis, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, alongside Dr. Mistura Adedoyin Rufia, Co-Task Team Lead of the IDEAS Project, Mrs. Blessing Ogwu, National Project Coordinator of the IDEAS Project in Nigeria, and other senior officials, provided a valuable opportunity for direct engagement with our beneficiaries and project team. In her role, Mrs. Ogwu provides national coordination and oversight, ensuring effective collaboration between the Federal Government of Nigeria, the World Bank, and all implementing institutions.

The IDEAS Project is a joint initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank, and it strongly aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as well as the strategic focus of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on revitalising Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a critical pathway for youth empowerment, job creation, and national productivity. The project stands as a practical expression of this shared commitment—bridging education, industry-relevant skills, and sustainable livelihoods for Nigerian youth.

What stood out most for me was interacting with the 100 trainees currently acquiring practical skills in computer and phone repairs. Seeing their enthusiasm, focus, and hands-on competence reaffirmed our commitment at YabaTech to skills-driven education that directly translates to employability and self-reliance.

I commend our Training Programme Manager, Dr. Funmilayo Doherty, and the entire YabaTech IDEAS Team for their dedication and professionalism. While YabaTech is proud to be one of the implementing partners of the IDEAS Project, the commendation from the World Bank delegation further strengthens our resolve to remain a reliable partner in implementing national education reforms and delivering impactful TVET outcomes.

At YabaTech, we will continue to support the Federal Government’s vision by creating platforms that empower our youth with relevant skills, innovation capacity, and sustainable economic opportunities.

For nearly eight decades, YABATECH has stood as a symbol of technical excellence, resilience, and national service. Over the years, I have watched the landscape of education evolve, and one truth has become increasingly clear to me: certificates alone no longer define readiness or relevance. What truly matters is competence, the ability of our graduates to think critically, work skillfully, and contribute meaningfully in real world settings.

It is from this conviction that our partnership with the John Basil Mandilas Foundation was born. This collaboration represents more than the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding; it is a shared commitment to bridge the long standing gap between theory and practice. By aligning academic instruction with hands on industrial exposure, we are intentionally repositioning our students for success in today’s demanding workplace.

The launch of the HVAC R training programme through the Mandilas Modulus Academy reflects our belief that learning must extend beyond classrooms and workshops into the realities of industry. When students combine intensive classroom learning with structured industrial experience, they gain not just skills, but confidence, discipline, professionalism, and ethical grounding, qualities that employers seek and society needs.

I am particularly proud that YABATECH will provide certified quality assurance assessors to ensure that this programme aligns with national skills frameworks and globally recognised standards. This reinforces our resolve to produce graduates who are not only employable locally but competitive anywhere in the world.

There is also a symbolic depth to this partnership. YABATECH, at 79 years, and the Mandilas Group, approaching 75 years, share a heritage of endurance, relevance, and contribution to Nigeria’s development. Coming together at this point in our histories feels both timely and purposeful.

As I reflect, I am confident that early exposure to the world of work will shape our students into responsible, industry ready graduates who will make meaningful impact across the nation. This partnership affirms our vision to educate not just for certification, but for competence, character, and contribution.

For me, this is the future of technical education, practical, ethical, and deeply connected to the needs of society.

Earlier this week, I had the honour of formally welcoming our newly recruited teaching and non-teaching staff into the Yaba College of Technology family at the start of the 2026 academic year.

I reminded them that joining YABATECH went beyond employment; it marked the beginning of a commitment to public service and to sustaining a legacy of excellence that has endured since 1947. As an institution that has produced leaders, innovators and nation builders, every new staff member was charged to see themselves as custodians of our values and reputation.

During the engagement, I emphasized integrity, professionalism, discipline and service as non-negotiable principles. I made it clear that YABATECH maintains zero tolerance for corruption, extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct. Our students remain our greatest assets and must always be treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

I also challenged our academic staff to move away from outdated teaching methods, embrace student-centred and technology-driven learning, and strengthen research and industry relevance. As we continue our journey towards becoming a smart campus, continuous learning, innovation and collaboration remain essential.

Our new colleagues were selected through a rigorous process and we have confidence in their abilities. I encouraged them to give their best, protect the good name of this great institution, and work collectively to further position YABATECH for greater national and global relevance.

Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to excellence, accountability and impact.
