HUSTLE CULTURE: The Illusion of the 24/7 Grind

In Nigeria, "hustle" is more than a word; it is our national anthem. We wear our exhaustion like a badge of honour. We praise the professional managing three side gigs while working a 9-to-5. We celebrate the remote worker thriving on four hours of sleep. But we rarely talk about the cost. The glorification of the 24/7 hustle has blurred the line between diligence and self-destruction.

✔️ The Screen that Never Sleeps: Technology was supposed to liberate our time. Instead, it chained us to our desks. With smartphones, a WhatsApp message from a boss at 10:00 PM requires an immediate reply. A Slack notification on a Saturday morning triggers instant anxiety. We have internalized the dangerous myth that if we are not actively producing, we are failing. This constant digital connectivity leaves no room for our brains to idle, recover, or simply breathe.

✔️ Rest is Not a Luxury: Choosing a digital detox is not a sign of weakness or a lack of ambition. It is a radical act of self-preservation. True productivity requires rest. True creativity requires silence. When we constantly chase the next milestone without unplugging, we do not achieve success. We achieve burnout.

✔️ Redefining the Hustle: It is time to change the narrative.
• Know when to disconnect to reconnect: Turn off work notifications occasionally.
• Normalize boundaries: Acknowledge that a delayed response when necessary is smart, not lazy.
• Prioritize peace over panic: Value "how well we live" over "how busy we are".

These are tough times, and survival requires effort. However, we must remember that we work to live; we do not live to work. Hope this makes sense.
