The Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi refers to the passing (death) of St. Francis from this earthly life to eternal life with God.

The word Transitus is a Latin term meaning “passage,” “crossing,” or “transition.”

In the Franciscan tradition, it specifically marks the evening of October 3rd, 1226, when St. Francis of Assisi died at the Portiuncula (the little chapel he loved most, near Assisi).

Franciscans around the world celebrate the Transitus liturgy on the night of October 3rd (the eve of his feast day, October 4th), remembering Francis’ final moments, his words of peace, and his joyful passage into eternal life.

So, the Transitus of St. Francis is both a memorial of his death and a celebration of his entrance into heaven, reminding the faithful of the hope of resurrection and eternal l
