Imagine being there:
Everyone knows Levi's reputation. People probably crossed the street to avoid him. Religious leaders certainly didn't see him as "apostle material."
Then Jesus walks up to him, looks past all the labels, and says:
"Follow me."
No probation period. No "clean yourself up first." No "come back when you've changed."
Just "Follow me."
And Levi gets up and follows.
That's one of the beautiful things about Jesus throughout the Gospel of Mark. He sees what people can become, not just what they currently are. He saw a tax collector, but He also saw a future disciple, a future Gospel writer, and a man whose life would be completely transformed.
It's worth noticing too that Jesus didn't choose only scholars, priests, or influential people. His disciples included fishermen, a former tax collector, and ordinary men. God's kingdom often advances through people the world overlooks.
