General information
What originally in 1995 started as a Sunday morning Christian fellowship for a few children in the community known as ‘Little Disciples Of Jesus’ metamorphosed in later years into GEMS – GOD EVANGELICAL MINISTRIES. Since its formal inception in September 2007, GEMS has been run as a community-oriented Christian ministry. We preach the gospel at our House Fellowship every Saturday, broadcast TBN daily for public viewing, publish Church Unusualonline on the internet, support the weak within our community and assist people to fulfill their divine destiny. We feed the poor regularly-taking food to the destitute on the streets and in beggar colonies. We give out free water and scholarships for those in need at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. We give out free bibles to all who do not have and need one as well as assist in the distribution of a daily devotional, THE WORD FOR TODAY especially to schools in our immediate environment. In December 2008 our programme SPIRIT OF THE CHILD - a street party for neighbourhood children hosted an estimated 500 children and 100 adults at its first outing. Acknowledged by all as successfully putting smiles on the faces of all the children, it included children from the beggars’ colony in Idi-Araba, from the Cheshire Children’s Home in Mushin as well as the SOS Children’s home in Isolo. As part of this programme also, 14 bursaries were disbursed – 4 primary, 7 secondary, 2 university and 1 tutorial. We shall also embark on two major projects – provision of borehole water/refurbishment of a beggar’s colony near us and acquisition of three buildings to provide hostels for young men and women and a shelter for the homeless. Some of our other programmes include paying for vocational training/skills acquisition for young persons, leadership training at the Sea School for young people, providing school supplies to children. ‘ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING’ is our annual evening of community hymn singing and joie de vive. As part of this programme we disburse short-term interest free loans to women (especially widows and single parents) to start or expand small businesses. At our weekly Fellowship ‘MOMENTS OF PLEASURE IN GOD’S PRESENCE’, we give out necessary supplies of groceries to those who need it. We are also embarking on giving out insecticide treated mosquito nets to school children and fruit baskets to the Old Peoples Home. At the leading of HIM who has sent us, GEMS PREPARATORY MISSIONS SCHOOLS – GPMS, is being established to provide free of charge, a first class educational facility of international standard for children of destitute in Mushin Local Government. Our Ministry is not bereft of ideas to assist the Lord to touch the lives of people but funding remains a major challenge for us. We are resolute though in pursuing what God has committed into our hands – if it is HIS will, then it is HIS bill!!! We look at the darkness in our communities and long to light them up. We see wounds and long to bring healing. We see spiritual death and want to replace it with eternal life. In spite of the number of churches, however, there are still many people who are spiritually lost, hungry, and dying. Too often status-quo ministry ignores these people. The hunger and lost ness continue, and we devote little thought, planning, or action toward providing genuine solutions. God is working in the world, and He invites us to join Him. But He doesn't limit himself to tried-and-true methods, and He never shies away from disruptive innovation. In fact, if you study Jesus' method of ministry, you could easily argue that God prefers bold, people-focused initiatives that fly in the face of convention. Jesus' entrepreneurship opened people's eyes to spiritual truth in startling, unsettling, but welcome ways. God calls us all to follow Him in the risky, exciting journey of entrepreneurial ministry. We can't live as true imitators of Jesus without practicing this type of faith. Any individual, any group, and any church or organisation can do something big for God as we get involved in what God is doing. Entrepreneurial faith connects with our individual Monday-through-Friday life with practical outreach that meets human needs with the grace of God. Please join us to form innovative partnerships to launch new ventures for God. WE MUST TAKE THE CHURCH TO THE COMMUNITY!!!
