The meme below is built on another false dichotomy that Christians often engage with respect to salvation. It presents salvation as a gift and therefore not a reward. The assumption is that a thing cannot be a gift and a reward at the same time. This is based on the notion that a reward is directly equal to payment. This is not true.
A gift is something you give at your own cost without obligation. A reward is something you give to recognise or appreciate someone for who they are or for something they did. This can be from obligation or as payment. But it can also be apart from the lack of it. A reward can therefore refer to a payment as well as a gift. It is not directly equal to payment.
That salvation is a gift is not in dispute. What most Christians have been inadvertently indoctrinated not to see is that it is a gift given after doing things, which makes it a reward.
When Peter confronted Jesus with the fact that they had left everything and followed him, and so asked what was in this for them, Jesus said:

Jesus here presents eternal life, which is the end of salvation, as reward for a life of forsaking things and following him.
While encouraging believers who were on the verge of abandoning faith, the writer of Hebrews said:
What he refers to as their confidence, which he asks them not to cast away, is their faith. He says faith has great REWARD. The reward he was referring to here is salvation at the coming of Christ. This is why he goes on to say:

In other words, in order to inherit the promise of salvation, they needed to endure in doing the will of God. It is only if and after they endure that they will receive the reward of faith, which is salvation. Anyone who draws back from enduring in the faith would become displeasing to God and so not be rewarded with eternal life.
The writer would later go on to extrapolate from the faith of Enoch what faith that pleases God entails, saying:

Note the part about God being the One who REWARDS those who seek him. This shows how reward is very connected to faith, contrary to what we have generally been taught to think.
The idea that salvation is by faith apart from doing anything, while reward is by works or by doing something, is based on an imperfect understanding of the word "reward." It assumes a reward is always something earned whereas a reward can also be something unearned but just given by the giver to appreciate the recipient for doing something pleasing to the giver.
The truth is that the church has failed Christians in teaching them the whole counsel of God about salvation. The reason is because many teachers are shortchanged by the lack of breadth of understanding of the English language.
Salvation is a gift because God bears the cost and owes it to no one as an obligation. It is however a reward because he does not give it for doing nothing. He gives it to those who believe and endure till the end. These truths of God about salvation are not contradictory. They are also very plainly and richly testified to across Scripture.
