The Fallacy of Sin

Sin dates back to the early period of man’s existence, and it is basically a separation from God (Isaiah 59:2). It is whatever we do that makes God unhappy or that is contrary to His commandments as enshrined in His word (1 John 3:4). It is the reason man was sent out of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:23–24). Sin comes with consequences; these consequences are already evident in our world today (Romans 6:23).
But many false beliefs about sin have clouded the minds of believers. Let us confront them one by one.

Fallacy 1: “We were born in sin, so we can’t stop sinning”
This mindset assumes sin is our permanent identity, and living free from it is impossible. Yes, we were born in sin (Psalm 51:5), but that is exactly why Jesus Christ came, to give us a new birth and nature that God can identify with without having to shrink his face.

Truth: He who is born of God does not make sin a habit (1 John 3:9). Righteousness is as much a choice as sin is (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Fallacy 2: “We are helpless against sin”
This lie paints sin as an unbeatable force. It whispers that we will always fall and there is nothing we can do.

Truth: Where sin abounds, grace abounds much more (Romans 5:20). We are not helpless—we only need to walk in the new life we have received. And if we sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, he is Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1).
Fallacy 3: “Sin can be justified by our circumstances”
Today, men excuse sin through clever reasoning. Sexual immorality gets justified by science. Gambling gets excused because of hardship. But these are only human inventions.

Truth: The foundation of God stands sure—“Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19). Nothing justifies going contrary to God’s principles for godly living (Romans 6:1–2).
Fallacy 4: “God will lower His standard because sin abounds”
This is perhaps the most subtle lie. It assumes that if the world becomes dark enough, God will dim His light.

Truth: God’s standards remain holy and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). We are called to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15–16), and to seek His kingdom and righteousness here on earth (Matthew 6:33).
The Call
Sin is not the external—it is the internal. All that we do or say flows from the abundance of our hearts (Matthew 12:34; Mark 7:21–23). We must therefore make deliberate effort, by God’s Spirit, to eliminate sin from our lives regardless of our prevailing circumstances. We are called to live the life of God and establish His kingdom here on earth.
