EVERY NIGHT, MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW LINGERED IN THE SHOWER FOR OVER AN HOURā¦ ONE EVENING, I PUT MY EAR TO THE DOOR AND INSTANTLY DIALED 911 šØ Every evening, without fail, Daniela ā my brand-new daughter-in-law ā would disappear into the bathroom after dinner and stay there for more than an hour. The sound of running water never stopped, and from under the door came a strange scent ā not the perfume she wore during the day, but a stronger smell, almost masculine. At first, I found it merely curious. Then annoying. Finallyā¦ my suspicions began to rise. Daniela had been married to my son Leonardo for less than three months. She worked as an assistant ā gentle, polite, always attentive. Leonardo, on the other hand, was a civil engineer who often traveled to his work sites, sometimes gone for an entire week. I was pleased with her: she cooked well, kept the house tidy, and went to work on time. But this habit disturbed me: every evening, at exactly 8 p.m., she would lock herself in the bathroom for an endless amount of time. When she came out, her hair was wetā¦ but there was never any steam in the room. And that unusual scent lingered. One evening, while glancing at the trash, I noticed a moist wipe of an unknown brand ā for menās hygiene ā with a strong mint smell. A wave of worry began to grow inside me. āWhat ifā¦ a man was coming into our home? Or worseā¦ was already living here?ā I told no one. Leonardo was away on a trip. So I decided to act alone. I set up a small hidden camera in a flower pot facing the bathroom. But strangely enough, every time Daniela went in, the image went black. As if she had covered the lens. The next day, I tried something else: I pressed my ear against the door. The water wasnāt running continuously ā it was being turned on and off at intervals. I also heard murmursā¦ like a whispered conversation. Then suddenly, a manās voice, clear and distinct: ā āYes, wait a moment. Iām coming.ā My blood froze. No man was supposed to be inside the house.
