The Big Bang and the Expanding Universe: A Meeting Point of Faith and Physics
In the world of science and religion, some assume a separation — a line where belief ends and evidence begins. But to those who reflect, especially through the lens of Islam, the two are not opposites. Rather, they are two mirrors reflecting the same truth from different angles. One of the most fascinating overlaps between Islamic scripture and modern physics lies in the story of the origin of the universe — what scientists call the Big Bang Theory and what the Qur’an refers to with powerful, poetic clarity.
Let’s dive into a deep exploration of the creation of the universe, its continued expansion, and how Islamic teachings have been echoing this truth for over 1,400 years.
THE BIRTH OF EVERYTHING: SCIENCE CALLS IT THE BIG BANG
In scientific terms, the Big Bang Theory states that about 13.8 billion years ago, the universe began from an extremely hot, dense point — often called a singularity. This "spark" didn't just explode in space; it created space. Time itself began from that moment. There was no “before” the Big Bang — just nothingness, until suddenly, everything.
The Big Bang was not a traditional explosion. Rather, it was the sudden expansion of all matter and energy, in all directions. From that small point, the universe began to expand — a process that continues to this very moment.
THE QUR'ANIC WHISPER OF THE BEGINNING
Now, turn the pages of the Qur’an. In Surah Al-Anbiya (21:30), we find a verse that rings with astonishing familiarity:
> "Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?"
This verse speaks volumes. “Joined entity” — just like the singularity. “We separated them” — a clear reference to the cosmic expansion. Long before humans even conceived of a telescope, the Qur’an described a u
