Bigard Memorial Seminary Enugu, Nigeria, is one of the largest and most prestigious Catholic major seminaries in Africa.
Founded in 1924, it trains candidates for the priesthood and recently celebrated its centenary. It is a renowned institution known for producing influential clergy and shaping the Catholic Church in West Africa.

History:
Originally known as St. Paul's Seminary in Onitsha, it relocated multiple times due to the Nigerian Civil War and accommodation constraints before settling permanently in Enugu in 1951. It was renamed in honor of Stephanie and Jeanne Bigard, French foundresses of the Opus Sancti Petri Apostoli society who funded the institution.
Papal History:
In 1982, Pope John Paul II visited Bigard Memorial Seminary, making it the first Nigerian seminary to host a Pope.
Formation Pillars: The curriculum is based on four core pillars: spiritual, academic, pastoral, and human formation.
Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Aloysius Ezeoba is the current rector of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu. He took over as the 22nd rector, succeeding Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Albert Okey Ikpenwa in May 2026.
